That's a rather bold statement. And a rather untrue one. It won't be the people not buying DVDs that kill the medium. And it's through no fault of their own. They don't set the prices. A lot of anime is a downright rip-off. The best bet is importing where you get a fairly good deal, but even that's getting more expensive.

Anime is not like a DVD movie where eventually it'll drop to bargain bin price. It's not that people that love it are too cheap, it's that, realistically, it's too inconvenient to buy six DVD sets of the same show for the same price. That's why many companies put out collection sets.

Well time is money and they can make most series longer than that. That or they will make them longer with crappy filelrs and destroy the anime bit by bit.

The 26 limit is a good thing. That equates to roughly two seasons worth. Fillers only destroy anime if it's a huge string of them all at once. Like Naruto. But that improved considerably once it got into Shippuden. And, if we want to get technical, plenty of 26 episode anime are already filled with filler. Trigun is a big example. If you want to get technical, Cowboy Bebop is all filler with only five or so episodes of non filler. It all depends on how the filler is presented.

Yvl, not all anime is better off having more episodes. It works for some shows. Otherwise they do the next best thing: make a new season. It's working for Shikabane-Hime Kuro, it's working for Minami-ke Okaeri, it might even work for Afro Samurai: Resurrection.

Not everyone wants a long anime series. It's a matter of convenience.

here DVD's are 19.99 and have 5 episodes typically :I dunno what to say.

I have seen them and I don't like them, they are stupid.

I don't even care too much if anime dies because then at least I will be proven right which is a good thing in my book, but it is the downloading of anime that destroys the anime business. Of course a lot of businesses are suffering, I heard something about the porn industry dying on Mike and Mike in the Morning yesterday which I thought was rather funny, sry Mr Flynt we can't give you a bailout.

Afterall if I downloaded all my anime for free then that is around $18,000 that the anime business would have lost because that is about what I have spent on dvds.

I don't make a lot of money or anything I just do things the right way, the legal way and I have no problem with subs at all. I like a lot of the voice actors in the game and I can recognize them by their' voice right away most of the time. If you are too cheap to do a hobby then you should find a cheaper hobby to pursue, it is that simple.

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone with that kind of money - hell, I'm better off than most people, and everything I've bought doesn't add up to that much. I do buy the ones I really love, just to have a hard copy of them, like Higurashi and Berserk (which I've spent about $500 on alone) but there's no way for people to afford to buy every anime they heard from a friend might be good. With all the crap that's out there, the chances are that it's going to suck, and it'll be $30 wasted on just a few episodes. That's the point thae author is trying to make, I think.

That's not the point at all. Anime movies don't all follow the formula of 'ass kicking'. It's not like every anime is action filled like your vampire ones or whatever. Sometimes people prefer story and art direction over buckets of animated blood.

People download music. They still support their favorite artists. It's the exact same scenario here.

Okay, many of us EFers will just give up gaming as a hobby. I mean, after all if we can't afford $60 a game then what business do we have playing games in the first place? I guess I'll also stop going to movies every weekend because I can't afford $20 a weekend. If hobbies were cheap they'd be interests.

Just pointing out that many people who download anime do so only for series that never see the light of day in other countries outside of Japan.

In that respect, the companies aren't losing much money to those from other countries since their product was never available to them in the first place (and of course I refer to series that never get proffesional subtitles. Very few non-Japanese speaking/reading people will import a series that has no subtitles)

Obviously that's not the case for everyone, but it's still true for most.

Many people support their favorite series and/or companies by purchacing their series/products when available.

lol I know I said it above that I don't make millions of dollars I just do everything the right way, I pay for everything I get and I work for all the money I get in order to pay for all the things I want out of life. I was raised the right way that is all. As for the 'snobbish' attitude, you usually have one yourself, but yes I do see myself as being better than you, and a huge majority of the people here.

5-10 years ago the anime business was booming, and everyone wanted to get in the game. Afterall it looked like it would be a solid investment with sales being good for everything anime. With all the access the internet gives people and everything the people who say they love anime are destroying the business, which is what the report said that I posted in my original post. I can't see any real fault in the author's words.

On a side note I seem to have made my lady angry with paying so much attention to this topic and not enough to her lol. Guess i'll have to call her back.

You're acting like one of those rich kids in a sitcom that thinks everyone is a lesser being because they wear clothes from the Salvation Army. You're acting like a stuck up dick. We're all humans. Also, it seems like you're assuming other people who like anime don't have jobs or something. It's not like anime is a number one priority. Many people prefer spending their cash on things that are essential to life. I had a job for two years and I didn't rush off and spend my cash on anime and video games. It's the classic economic principle of needs versus wants.

Okay, what about people who stream but don't download. Victimless crime, right? All they're doing is watching something on YouTube or something. You act like someone downloading an episode of a series that may never come to whatever region they live in is somehow going to ruin the entire industry. Not everyone wants to dish out a bunch of cash to have an imported DVD that may not even have subs just because they love anime.

It's no different than those websites that let you read manga on the internet. Have you even considered the possibility that these 'thieves' might actually still consider buying a series or two? I've downloaded my share of anime episodes. Guess what? If I like a series I've downloaded, I buy the series. Not every single person who downloads anime is some petty thief.

Yeah, I'm sure Geneon is really going to be hurting after that merger with Universal Pictures Japan. Not like Universal Pictures is big or anything. I mean, NBC isn't a big company at all.

How's the view from on top of that high horse? Yes, my actions of supporting the series I like, much like I do with music artists, certainly led to the so-called downfall of anime. Wow. Better lock me up, then. All those series I purchased after downloading some episodes really hurt the industry. I'm such a stupid person.

It still IS booming. If it wasn't there wouldn't be so many new titles coming out in the coming months. Just because it's not as big in America as it was in the 90s doesn't mean it's somehow not still going strong. And what do you mean by everyone wanted to get in the game? If you mean overseas companies, that's just not true. DIC was almost responsible for bringing anime to mainstream American households and even that is an international corporation.

I didnt read everyone else's posts, but I dont think anything will stop the current obsession with anime. I was never big into it at all, or manga for that matter. However, I know tons and tons of people who are anywhere from interested to obsessed. Even if all production stopped, it wouldnt stop people from watching and reading what was out there already.
Im sure the ability to see it for free makes the market of it lose money, BUT, same with CDs, I dont buy them I save my money, yet I know a ton of people who still put out an arm and a leg to own that CD physically, and its the same with anime. Plus to many its all collectors items.
As someone who enjoys creating things, itd be an honor if people downloaded what I made, the fact they liked it. As a business woman, itd ruin it as a career. Think about it, if you really loved making anime or manga, you would probably get a job that pays well and do it in your spare time because thats what you love.

As quality goes I cant say much for that since I wouldnt know because Im not a fan.
