Nintendo: Innovators Of The Gaming World

Nintendo - Forward thinking or just taking risks ?

Last Month saw Nintendo showing off its new forward thinking console the Nintendo Wii at the E3 show in the Los Angeles Convention Centre. This was not the only console being previewed at E3, Sony were also introducing their brand new console, the Playstation 3.

But there was something new about this console, it didn’t follow in the footsteps of Sony or Microsoft. Nintendo had decided to take a different path, according to Reggie in the Pre-E3 meeting “ if your just looking for next generation then Nintendo is not for you. The Wii is not just next generation, its something brand new “, and how right he was.

If you didn’t know anything about the Nintendo Wii before E3 then you must have been in for a big surprise. The main difference being the controller. Its not your standard controller like say the PS3 controller, its something completely different. A motion sensitive controller than can mimic your every move on the screen.

Think about when your mum or dad tries to play Mario Kart, do they ever turn the controller to the left or right when turning the car round corners. When trying to make Mario jump do they lift the controller up trying to pull Mario upwards ?. Waving the controller around to try and control the action is what most people do when they first try to play games. Just think about a system that could make this a reality.

This is what Nintendo have managed to create with the Wii. A games console that’s not all graphics based, they have decided to concentrate on game play and create a console that anyone young or old can come along and pick up with needing to be an expert or a “ gamer “.

But this isn’t the first time Nintendo have been at the forefront of gaming. Almost ten years ago to this month saw the launch of the Nintendo 64. The Nintendo 64 from launch began to change the face of gaming. It was the first console to have 4 controller inputs allowing 4 player gaming without the need for a multi-tap. The Nintendo 64 has full 3D graphics and these brought the games to life in a way that people had never seen before.

The Nintendo 64 saw arguably some of the best games ever created. Shigeru Miyamoto used the Nintendo 64 system to make some of the best games on the Nintendo 64, these included -

- Mario 64
- Legend Of Zelda - Ocarina Of Time
- Legend Of Zelda - Majoras Mask
- Mario Kart 64
- Super Smash Bro’s
- Star Fox
- F-Zero X.

Mario 64 was available from launch day and was quickly described as the greatest game ever made. Most people can remember the first time they played on Mario 64. It was the first fully 3D Mario game and also the first game featuring fully 3D environments.
The game was like no other Mario game had been before. Peach’s castle was in glorious 3D for you to run around and explore. The game was amazing. Full 3D worlds that could be explored by jumping into various paintings scattered around the castle.

The Zelda franchise is one of the biggest in gaming and the Nintendo 64 saw two games released, Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask. Both these games were big sellers, Ocarina of time sold quickly became a cult game among Zelda fans. It has become one of the greatest RPG’s of all time. The game see Link travel across the land of Hyrule battling enemies and trying to overcome the evil Ganondorf, the King of the Gerudo Thieves.

Another major thing about the Nintendo 64 was the controller, when people saw it they thought it looked strange but when you picked it up you knew Nintendo had put a lot of thought into it. It just fitted perfectly into your hand. You could control the action with the analogue stick but also control the camera angle using the D-pad on the controller.

Third party support was very high for the Nintendo 64. There were over 400 games released across the world by Nintendo and third parties. The Nintendo 64 also saw Nintendo and Rare working together to produce some amazing games. Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie were both great adventure games and Goldeneye 64 won awards for being the greatest multi player shooter ever.

So with the Wii being shown off a lot of people will be thinking that this is the first time Nintendo have dared to be different but throughout there history they have always been the first to be different. The NES saw the first controller to be made with a D-Pad. . It was simple brilliance, a cross-shaped directional control pad, two small round buttons for your thumb and Twin 'Start' and 'Select' buttons. This was then closely followed by Sega and the Master system controller.

Then there was the Virtual Boy, Nintendo’s forward thinking Virtual reality unit which didn’t sell very well but fast became a collectors item due to it being produced for only a short amount of time.

Another innovative console from Nintendo was the DS. It had a touch screen and a microphone which can both be used to controller the action on screen making gaming a much more involved experience.

Knowing Nintendo there may still be surprise features yet to be announced for the Wii but rest assured it will have all the Nintendo games that make the consoles great, already announced are Metroid Prime 3, a completely new 3D Mario game ( codename galaxy ) and a completely new version of Animal Crossing which will take full advantage of the Wii control system.

Whatever happens it seems Nintendo are the company of the moment. They managed to steal Sony’s limelight at E3 and have produced a new forward thinking console to take them well into the next generation of gaming.

Lots of people think that Nintendo is going to come out on top with the console war. We will just have to wait and see but with its price being so low it won't have any trouble selling at launch like the Ps3 might.

Not unless Sony or Nintendo changes the price tag.

Yeah if nintendo raises its price or Playstation lowers theres it might turn out different. I don't think we will have a shortage of Ps3's at launch nearly as bad as we did for the Ps2 simply because many people can't afford it's starting price. Hopefully i'm right so that I can get one

Well if the game I want to get when the ps3 is out and isn't out when it first comes out..then I'll wait for the ps3 and that game to lower in price after it also comes out to save money.

I actually find that article laughable. The N64 had those games, and those games only. It was the N64 that set them BACK so many years. And Rare alone is not amazing third party support. These guys sound like Microsoft.

And star fox was out for SNES before N64.
