Mood Music

On a flight from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles, America the plane, Oceanic Flight 815, experiences turbulence and crashes onto an island after splitting in half - the tail section gets separated and people fly into the air to die. The survivors of the crash are in a panic because, dude, plane crash. The survivors are made up of a diverse group of people, but the main bunch consist of:

-Jack Shephard, a spinal surgeon

-Kate Austen, a criminal

-John Locke, a mid-level employee at a box factory

-Sayid Jarrah, an Iraqui soldier who tortured people in the Gulf War

-Sawyer, a con man from down south

-Hugo "Hurley" Reyes, a jovial sort who won the lottery

-Claire Littleton, a pregnant Australian

-Charlie Pace, a British washed up one hit wonder rock star with a heroin addiction

-Boon Carlisle and Shannon Rutherford, siblings that no one likes

-Michael Dawson, the black guy who has a strained relationship with his young son, Walt

-Sun and Jin, Koreans who are married - Jin being a controlling asshole who doesn't speak English and Sun hiding secrets from her husband.

Mood Music

Initially the show is about the main bunch of survivors trying to both survive and to get off the island. Jack, being a doctor and also the main character, emerges as something of a leader to the survivors. Not everyone likes Jack. Sawyer, being the asshole, antagonizes Jack because Sawyer has feelings for Kate who has feelings for both Jack and Sawyer. Sayid, being good with electronics, tries to fix a radio and stumbles upon a short-wave radio signal repeating the same message for over eighteen years. Sayid goes off on his own to find the source of the signal and stumbles upon a French woman named Rousseau who's been alone on the island for years.

The secondary lead character is John Locke who, apart from being the best character on the show, is the opposite of Jack. Jack is a man of science while Locke is a man of faith. Locke, who was a cripple in a wheelchair before the crash, is now healed and believes the island is special and that they shouldn't leave. He discovers a strange hatch and tries to open it with the help of Boone. In so doing, Locke ends up responsible for Boone's death, though Locke referred to it as 'a sacrifice the island demanded'.

(John Locke explaining the conflict of 'black and white' in the first episode in clumsy foreshadowing)

During the days of survival, Claire gets kidnapped by a man who was pretending to be a plane survivor but was actually an agent for 'The Others'. None of the survivors know about The Others only that they appear to be primal, jungle dwellers, and that they kidnapped Claire and when she returned she had amnesia because of fucking course she did. Charlie, who has feelings for Claire, winds up killing the Other agent because Charlie is a useless drug addict. No answers are revealed because Charlie fucking kills the guy.

Mood Music

Michael, who just wants to leave with his son, decides to build a raft, but problems arise when it looks like Sun and he are going to fuck, but Sun remains loyal to Jin and Jin, initially hating Michael for stealing his father-in-law's watch, winds up helping Michael build the raft. Michael, Jin, Sawyer, and Walt all go on the raft to try and find a way to rescue everyone. Things don't go well as Walt gets kidnapped by some bearded men, the men destroy the raft, and Michael, Jin, and Sawyer are trapped in the ocean.

Back on the island, Jack discovers that Locke killed Boone and demands to be taken to the hatch. Locke, Jack, Kate (who is useless), and Hurley decide to blow up the hatch door to get inside. Hurley sees numbers written on the side of the hatch, 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 and panics because those are the numbers he played to win the lottery and he believes them to be cursed. Jack, being the man of science, blows open the hatch.

And that's just the first season. We've got five more. With me so far?

(The final shot of season one, Jack and Locke looking into the hatch)

Mood Music

Inside the hatch Jack, Kate, and Locke find a man named Desmond who has been living there by himself and pushing a button every 108 minutes "to save the world". The hatch has supplies, a fully stocked food pantry, music, books, a shower, beds, and Desmond fucks off to let the survivors push the button. Jack finds the entire thing ridiculous but decides to keep the hatch a secret because Jack's a fucking idiot.

Locke starts to push the button because he believes in the island and in Desmond's claim, so every 108 minutes he puts in the code of 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42 and pushes the button. Hurley and Kate help him with this.

Jin, Michael, and Sawyer wind up on a different side of the island and meet up with a group of tail section survivors: Ana-Lucia, a former cop Libby, and Mr. Eko, an African warlord turned priest. They all go back to the main section of the island and Ana-Lucia kills Shannon and no one really cared except for Sayid who loved her even though Sayid's entire point of going on the plane to begin with was the reunite with his long lost love.

Ana-Lucia feels guilty until Jack decides to give people guns (from the hatch's armory) in order to train an army to assault the camp of The Others. This doesn't work. Because Jack is an idiot.

Mood Music

The crazy French woman, after almost stealing Claire's baby, Aaron, takes Sayid to a man who is trapped in one of her traps. The main, Henry Gale, says he landed on the island after he and his wife crashed their hot air balloon. Sayid takes him back to the hatch, locks him in the armory, and he, Jack, Ana-Lucia, Kate, and Locke debate him and his story. Sayid and Ana-Lucia decide to investiage his claims because they think he's lying.

Meanwhile, Locke starts having a crisis of faith when Henry tells Locke that he didn't push the button and nothing happened. This crisis is exacerbated when Locke finds ANOTHER hatch with the help of Mr. Eko and discovers a tape that explains that pushing the button is a big psychological experiment conducted by the DHARMA Initiative.

Michael starts using the computer in the terminal to talk to Walt and decides to run off into the jungle on his own in order to get his son back. When Michael returns, he kills Ana Lucia and Libby, sets Henry Gale free. It's revealed that Henry Gale isn't even his name and that he was actually part of The Others all along. Michael rallies Hurley, Sawyer, Kate, and Jack to go after the Others while Jin, Sayid, and Sun decide to follow along to attack from the other side.

Michael leads his crew into a trap and it's revealed Henry Gale is really Ben Linus, the leader of The Others. Ben gives Michael passage off the island with his son while he sends Hurley back to the camp and takes Jack, Sawyer, and Kate hostage.

Michael is the worst.

While this is happening, Locke and Desmond (who tried to escape on a boat and failed) decide to stop pushing the button. But Mr. Eko believes that the button has a purpose. They lock Eko out of the room and decide not to push the button. The hatch starts shaking, shit gets fucked, and Locke realizes he was wrong. Desmond initiates a failsafe and the entire hatch implodes.

Also it's revealed that Desmond crashed Oceanic Flight 815 by accident. Whoops!

That's season two.

(Ben Linus, sometimes antagonist, always getting beat up)

Hang on, it's only going to get more complicated from here. Seasons 1 and 2 were fuckin' easymode, man.

Mood Music

On a seemingly normal day a blonde woman is making baked goods for a book club. It's a pleasant suburban morning, with pleasant people. The book they're discussing is Carrie or some King novel. A sudden explosion causes them to rush outside. In a shocking twist, it's The Others watching the plane crash. The Others are civilized! Gasp!

Jack is held prisoner by Ben and the blonde woman, Juliet Burke, who is a fertility doctor. Ben promises Jack that he can leave if he does what is asked of him. Jack, because he's an idiot, laughs at Ben and tells him to fuck off. Sawyer and Juliet are in cages and forced to do manual labor by the Others.

Jin, Sun, and Sayid wind up being confronted by The Others and they wind up fatally wounding one. The Others bring her back to have Jack save her. He can't. Her husband starts beating the fuck out of Sawyer and Kate tells him to stop because she loves Sawyer. So naturally the two of them then have sex and we can finally end the shitty love triahahahahahahah nope.

Jack has been brought to the prison to operate on Ben's spine. Juliet begs him to do the surgery and also to accidentally kill him in the process because Juliet hates being an Other and hates that Ben wants to bang her. Jack, having a strong moral compass but also being an idiot, is like "Nah, fuck that." But then he sees Sawyer and Kate banging, gets jealous, and is like "Fuckin fine, I'll do it."

Mood Music

Sidebar: Juliet is literally the best female character on the show by virtue of the show having terrible female characters. Until Juliet came along the best female character was Sun, who mostly spent the first few seasons crying about her husband. Kate is the worst, she exists only to cause drama in the males and fucks up nine times out of ten. Claire does nothing but be pregnant and cry about her baby. When Juliet is introduced it's a breath of fresh fucking air to have a female character actually accomplish shit and be generally awesome. If it wasn't for Locke, Juliet would be my favorite character.

After the hatch imploded, Desmond is sent back in time to 1996 and we learn that Desmond's entire life has been about failure. He has a wonderful girlfriend, Penny, whose father is Charles Widmore who is rich as fuck and hates Desmond because Desmond is a failure at everything. Desmond relives the day and meets an old woman, Mrs. Eloise Hawking at a jewelry shop. She tells Desmond that he "doesn't buy the ring" which of course is crazy. Hawking tells Desmond that the universe has a way of course-correcting itself and so Desmond breaks up with Penny again because he realizes that he'll have to face his destiny of winding up on the island. After an injury, he flashes back to the present on the island.

Desmond is literally unstuck in time now.

Jack operates on Ben but holds him hostage by cutting an artery and saying that he'll let Ben die if his demands aren't met. The Others let Sawyer, Kate, and two teenage lover Others go. The bitter husband that lost a wife decides to kill Sawyer but Juliet kills the husband instead. She's going to be executed but Jack gets her pardoned because he saved Ben. Jack stays behind with The Others while Kate and Sawyer go back to the survivor's beach.

Mr. Eko gets killed by the Smoke Monster - oh, right, there's a Smoke Monster on the island - because his job on the island was to reignite Locke's faith which he did. So they killed off one of the more interesting characters because fuck it.

Desmond starts having flashes of Charlie's death and though he prevents it twice, he tells Charlie that Charlie's gonna die.

Kate, Sayid, Locke, and Rousseau find YET ANOTHER DHARMA STATION/HATCH and find two Others inside. They have the survivor bring them to the Others village There they find Jack playing football with some of them and Kate's pissed because Jack's gonna leave the island. Kate and Sayid get captured while Locke sneaks into Ben's house and is convinced to blow up the submarine Jack and Juliet were gonna use to leave. Locke does so.

Mood Music

The Others leave their village and Locke goes with them. Locke is pretty much an Other now. Jack, Sayid, Juliet, and Kate fuck back to the beach where everyone's like "Whoa, Juliet's an Other, not cool, Jack" but they get over it. Sun is pregnant and Juliet is like "Yo Sun's gonna die if she stays here because women can't get pregnant on this island and they die if they are".

Desmond sees a flash of someone parachuting onto the island and it turns out to be a woman named Naomi. Naomi tells them that she was sent by Penny Widmore to find Desmond and rescue him and that there's a freighter offshore which could rescue them.

Back with the Others, Ben takes Locke to meet Locke's father who was the cause for a lot of problems in Locke's life pre-island including crippling him. I'm not going into character flashbacks, but it's a lot of unresolved daddy issues. Ben mocks Locke by saying that Locke can't kill his father and is thus unready to become an Other. Richard, another Other, tells Locke that Sawyer could do it since Locke's father also fucked up Sawyer's life. Locke takes Sawyer to the father and Sawyer kills him as revenge.

Locke demands to see Jacob, the supposed true leader of The Others, and Ben reluctantly complies. Ben believes only he can see Jacob so when Locke sees him and is asked for help, Ben goes super jealous, shoots Locke, and leaves him in a mass grave. Ben's kind of a dick but he's also a good character.

In a series of clusterfucks, the rest of the season is about the freighter. Charlie swims to an underwater station to let Naomi contact the freighter. In so doing he discovers that the boat is NOT Penny's boat and subsequently dies. Ben tries to warn Jack that the freighter is dangerous. Jack doesn't believe Ben and beats up Ben and takes him prisoner. Locke's about to kill himself but sees an apparition of Walt who warns Locke that the freighter is bad.

THE FREIGHTER IS BAD, DID YOU KNOW THAT?

Naomi and the survivors arrive at a radio tower and Naomi is going to call for the freighter but then she gets a knife in the back from Locke. Jack is pissed and doesn't believe that Locke's telling the truth about the danger so Jack calls the freighter. Everyone celebrates because hey, they're gonna get rescued!

In the final twist of the season, it's revealed that Jack got off the island and became a drunken asshole. He meets up with Kate who is tired of Jack's shit. Jack, pleads with Kate, yelling, "WE HAVE TO GO BACK, KATE. WE HAVE TO GO BACK."

Mood Music

As you can see, summarizing this show is a long process. We've still got three seasons to go.

Season 4 is when things get weird.

Mood Music

We know from the end of season three that at least two people got off the island, that being Kate and Jack. We learn from the opening to season four that six people get off the island, the third being Hurley who is caught speeding down a highway and yelling how he's "one of the Oceanic Six!"

This entire season will build up to who gets off the island and how.

After Locke kills Naomi the survivors split into two groups, Jack's group who side with the freighter, and Locke's group who believe that the freighter is dangerous. Jack vs Locke is sort of a main thing. Locke leads his group to the Other village to hide.

More characters are introduced now because that's what this show needs.

-Daniel Faraday, a nervous physicist and professor

-Miles Straume, he can talk to ghosts

-Charlotte Lewis, an anthropologist

-Frank Lapidus, The Lawnmower Man

Daniel reveals that they freighter isn't there for rescue and is, in fact, there to find Ben Linus. The freighter was hired by Charles Widmore to find the island.

Frank flies Desmond and Sayid to the freighter in a helicopter and it takes them a day to reach it because of time distortion bullshit. Daniel and Charlotte travel to yet another DHARMA station to turn off toxic gas that is produced there. People in Jack's camp learn that the freighter isn't exactly there to help and some decide to go move to Locke's camp.

Ben is aware that the freighter is there for him because he has a spy on the boat: Michael Dawson. Michael, after attempting suicide because he realized he's the worst, is given an order to prevent people on the island from dying by blowing up the boat, with him on it.

Mood Music

A group of mercenaries led by Martin Keamy arrive on the island from the freighter and attack Locke's camp at the Others village. Keamy kills some people, including Ben's adopted daughter, Alex (whom he stole from the Frenchwoman), The Frenchwoman, and Alex's boyfriend Karl. Good riddance.

Locke, Ben, and Hurley run to Jacob's Cabin in order to learn how to protect the island. Christian Shephard, Jack's dead dead, tells Locke that he has to move the island.

A bomb is discovered on the boat. It's linked to Keamy's heart rate. Michael, Jin, and Desmond use nitrogen to cool the bomb while Jack, Frank, Hurley, Kate, Sawyer, Sayid, and Aaron are en route to the freighter but Sawyer jumps into the ocean when it's too heavy to make the trip due to a bullet hole causing fuel leaks. As Sawyer swims back to the island, the chopper lands on the freighter as Ben kills Keamy.

Desmond runs to warn the chopper while Michael tells Jin to leave too since Jin's going to be a father. Desmond, Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Sun, Aaron, and Frank all make it onto the chopper as the freighter explodes, taking Michael and Jin with it. The chopper crashes in the ocean and they are rescued by Penny Widmore, who is finally reunited with Desmond. The Oceanic Six are: Jack, Kate, Aaron, Hurley, Sayid, and Sun, who all agree (along with Penny, Desmond, and Frank) to use a cover story to protect the others on the island.

Speaking of the island, Ben succeeds in moving the island and in a flash of light the island fucking vanishes.

Mood Music

After a press conference the Oceanic Six become famous because of their ordeal. Sayid is reunited with his love, Nadia, Hurley lives in his mansion with his parents, Jack returns to being a doctor, Kate lives with Aaron (Claire's baby) and Sun goes fucking aggro and swears revenge for the death of her husband.

Nadia dies, Sayid cries. Ben lands in the Sahara ten months after the moving of the island. He makes his way to Tikrit and recruits Sayid after telling Sayid that Nadia's killer works for Charles fucking Widmore.

Jack starts drinking because he learns Claire is his half sister. Hurley starts seeing visions of dead people. Sayid, who wanted to get away from life as a killer, becomes a killer again working as an assassin for Ben. Kate is put on trial for her crimes pre-island but manages to get a deal where instead of jail time she's banned from leaving California for a decade. Sun buys a controlling interest in her father's company and pretty much owns it for some reason. Jack proposes to Kate but gets jealous when she starts doing the favor Sawyer asked her to do. Jack is a drunken idiot.

Locke shows up under the alias of Jeremy Bentham and talks to the Oceanic Six and says they need to come back because some bad shit is going down on the island and it's Jack's fault. They collectively tell him to fuck right off.

Jack slips further into a spiral and starts taking planes every weekend hoping it'll crash on the island. Locke commits suicide and Jack is the only one who goes to the funeral, finally believing that Locke was right all along about the island. At the funeral home, Ben appears and tells Jack all of the Six are needed in order to get back to the island, including the body of John Locke.

Mood Music

Season 5 is all about time travel. After moving the island the people on the island start having random flashes through time. Locke is told to bring everyone back and goes down to move the island again to stop the flashes. One of the flashes has the cast meet a young Charles Widmore who lived on the island. Charlotte winds up dying and only Daniel cares because he had a thing for her. Locke is told to find Eloise Hawking by Ghost Dad Christian Shephard. He stops the flashes and arrives in Tunisia. Locke is saved by Charles and after adopting the name Jeremy Bentham sets out to recruit the Oceanic Six.

It doesn't work.

Locke writes his suicide note but Ben comes in and saves John, telling him that "he's important." Ben then kills John Locke by strangling him.

Eventually, Jack, Sun, Ben, and Desmond meet Eloise Hawking who is revealed to be Daniel's mom. Eloise tells them to recreate Oceanic 815 by taking Ajiria Flight 316. Eventually Jack, Kate, Sun, Hurley, Ben, Frank, Sayid, and Locke's corpse get on Ajiria 316 and after Jack reads Locke's suicide note ("I wish you had believed me"), the plane is engulfed in a white light.

On the island it's the year 1974 because time travel. Sawyer, Jin, Juliet, Daniel, and Miles live with the DHARMA Initiative people. Sawyer becomes head of security with Jin and Miles as his cops. Juliet works on cars. Daniel fucks off to Michigan to work with DHARMA folk. DHARMA is there to study the island's electromagnetic fields and shit. Sawyer and Juliet fall in love and live together.

Jack, Hurley, and Kate wind up in 1977 and are brought in as DHARMA members thanks to Jin and Sawyer. Sayid is ALSO in 1977 but because he's brown he gets assumed to be one of the Hostiles (DHARMA's version of The Others) and is told by a young Ben Linus that escape is possible.

Sayid fucking shoots little Ben because he doesn't understand time travel (but who does, really). Ben gets taken away by the Hostiles and saved.

In present day, Ben, Frank, and Sun arrive on the island and are told by Ghost Dad to hang out in Others Village for John Locke. John Locke shows up and takes control of The Others. Locke decides to go see Jacob and confides in Ben the desire to kill Jacob. Locke and Ben go to Jacob's home inside a statue.

Frank shows up with some character that no one remembers, and it's revealed that John Locke is fucking dead and that the John Locke inside the statue is someone else.

Surprise, it's the Smoke Monster, Jacob's brother, and he's become Locke in order to kill Jacob. The Smoke Monster, aka The Man in Black, aka Fake John Locke, has found a loophole that lets him kill Jacob, the immortal protector of the island. This loophole is having Ben do it. Ben kills Jacob. Jacob's dead.

Mood Music

(Jacob, aka The Good)

(The Man In Black, aka The Smoke Monster, aka The Bad)

In 1977, Daniel decides to blow up a bomb that The Hostiles have in order to prevent the events of the show from ever happening. Daniel gets shot and killed by his own mother, Jack and Sawyer have a fight, and Juliet dies blowing up the bomb, which incidentally is what causes the first hatch and the button to happen in the first place.

TIME TRAVEL.

The last season is fucking stupid.

---------- Post added at 03:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:42 PM ----------

Mood Music

Season Six happens. In it we learn that The Man in Black represents evil or something and all he ever wanted to do was leave the island. But Jacob was like "Nah, fuck you, bro" and wouldn't let him for some reason.

The Man in Black, using the body of Locke, starts recruiting people. He recruits Sawyer who's pissed over the death of Juliet and just wants off the island; he also has Claire on his side and Claire is crazy or something and who fucking cares about Claire. Sayid joins up with Locke too because of reasons.

Hurley takes Jack to a lighthouse because Jacob's ghost told him to do it. There they find a bunch of names, including his, Hurley's, Jin and Sun, Sawyer, and Kate. Jack and Hurley leave the lighthouse while The Man in Black fucking kills like all the Others because they won't go with him.

Richard tells Jack and Hurley about the massacre and tries to kill himself but can't because Jacob did some bullshit magic thing to him and the guy is like a couple centuries old by now.

Man in Black wants to recruit Sun but she runs away, hits her head, and loses the ability to speak because this show is stupid now.

A lot of back and forth happens as Man in Black keeps fucking around while Jack's crew decides to blow up the Ajira plane. Charles Widmore comes back for some reason because he might not be a total dick or something.

Eventually Sayid sacrifices himself in a moment of redemption, saving his friends and breaking free of Man in Black's influence. Sun and Jin die together even though they're finally reunited and, you know, HAVE A GOD DAMN DAUGHTER BACK HOME.

Jack, Hurley, Kate, and Sawyer meet up with Ghost Jacob who tells them that it's all his fault why the Man in Black is an evil prick. Rather than be like "Fuck you, guy," Jack decides to become the new Jacob: the protector of the island.

Man in Black and Ben kill Widmore and find out that Jacob is using Desmond as a failsafe to keep the Man in Black on the island. Man in Black decides to fuck it all and use Desmond to destroy the island somehow. It's because Desmond is all electromagnetized now and electromagnetism is the big secret of the island.

Jack, Man in Black, Kate, Ben, Hurley, Sawyer, and Desmond all go to the 'Source' which is a glowing cave or something. Jack and Fake Locke reminisce about the hatch since they're looking down into an abyss and Jack says that Locke was right, he was always right. Desmond uncorks the Source and the island starts to shake. Jack and Man in Black are suddenly mortal again.

Jack and Man in Black fight and Kate does the one thing useful and shoots Man in Black. He falls off a cliff and dies but not before stabbing Jack fatally. Jack, Ben, and Hurley decide to stay behind to fix Desmond's damage. Kate goes and joins up with Sawyer, Claire, Frank, Miles, and Sun as they board the Ajira plane and attempt to leave the island once and for all.

Jack, at the Source, makes Hurley the new Jacob and Hurley asks Ben to be his Number 2 and Ben agrees, finally being a good guy in the end. Jack gets Desmond out of the Source and plugs it up himself.

Mood Music

We're treated to a season long series of flash-whatevers that show the various characters we've known and grown to like and/or tolerate come together. Desmond acts as an anchor, and individually the memories of the island come flashing back. Juliet and Sawyer remember their love and are reunited. Jin and Sun are finally together happily. Sayid has Shannon again for some reason. Boone's there! Remember Boone? Charlie and Claire are there yay. Everyone except for Michael (fuck Michael) and Ben are in a church.

Jack arrives and he meets his dad and is confused what's up with the church. He finally realizes that he's dead. And that the season six 'flash sideways' universe was a sort of purgatory for him and all his island buddies to meet up together and move on to the afterlife together. "We've been waiting for you," says Locke to Jack as he embraces everyone. They all sit in the church pews as a white light engulfs them, taking the now dead people into the afterlife together. Moving On.

The final scene is Jack, after saving the island, clutching his fatal wound. He's learned to let go, finally. He falls into the bamboo thicket where the show opened. He's on his back. He hears the Ajira plane taking off and sees it flying away, carrying everyone (except Hurley and Ben and Desmond) away to live their lives free from the island.

And the show ends with Jack closing his eyes and dying on the island.

The ending drew a lot of criticism from people because it left some things unanswered and some even thought it was confusing. They spell it out quite clearly. Everyone eventually died and met up with each other in a church to move on together because the island changed their lives.

The summary of Lost is that it's a show that lost its way. What started as a drama about survival became more and more up its own ass about its bullshit mysteries and science that people started focusing more on that than anything else. You can't really summarize Lost because every season is such a different thing.

"Two players. Two sides. One is light. One is dark."

That's what Lost became in the end. Jack, the light, and Man in Black/Fake Locke, the dark. Lost is a show about good against evil. It just took six seasons and a shitload of time travel to get there.

For me, Lost died when Locke did. Locke is one of the most tragic characters in television and he was fascinating. And he made me a fan in the first season.

I like Lost. It's a great show. It's also really stupid how it wraps up.

But how jubilant they sounded! Their Investment was paid off. The voyage to Hawaii was under way, and their new life on Xultation would shortly begin... Watching them from the hangway, I envied their certainty about the future.
