Sources close to Game Informer Online have leaked news that Nintendo of America plans on relocating their large sales and marketing force from their headquarters in Redmond, Washington this year. Both San Francisco and New York were pointed at as being the potential targets for new locations.

Employees of Nintendo of America were told on Thursday that they would have to decide by June 1st whether or not they would be willing to relocate or accept a severance package. Our sources indicated these new offices would be opened as early as this Fall.

Originally Nintendo of America was created in New York City in 1980, and then later merged its facilities in Redmond, Washington in 1982. The Nintendo of America offices in Redmond not only house the sales and marketing forces, they’re also home to localization, the Treehouse, testing, customer service, events and planning, human resources, the Nintendo Power magazine, North American product warehouses, and more. Nintendo also has a manufacturing plant in North Bend, which is about 30 minutes east of Redmond. How this will affect these divisions, or if other divisions will be forced to move is still unknown at this point.

This move will affect a number of employees, most of which have been there for many years. We’ve contacted Nintendo of America and are still waiting for official word. We’ll keep you posted.

Perhaps they need a bigger facility? They are doing so well right now why not upgrade to a bigger facility?

Headquarters will remain in Redmond

By DAN RICHMAN
P-I REPORTER

Nintendo of America Inc. plans to move about 80 people, in three divisions, off its Redmond campus to either New York or San Francisco, a Redmond city official said Tuesday afternoon.

The game maker plans to move its sales, marketing and advertising divisions away from its campus at 4820 150th Ave. N.E. in Redmond, said Jim Roberts, deputy planning director for the city of Redmond.

He said Nintendo real estate executive Bruce Meyer confirmed the moves, adding that Meyer said the company plans to keep its corporate headquarters in Redmond.

Rumors of Nintendo's plans to move some or all of its employees out of Redmond have been appearing for four days on several gaming Web sites and blogs.

Nintendo owns about 8 million square feet in several buildings on the west side of state Route 520, adjacent to numerous Microsoft Corp. buildings. In March 2005 it had 756 employees on the Redmond campus.

Headquarters staying in Redmond; three divisions will be relocated

By DAN RICHMAN
P-I REPORTER

Nintendo of America Inc. plans to move about 80 employees in three divisions away from its Redmond campus to either New York or San Francisco, a city official said Tuesday.

The game maker plans to move its sales, marketing and advertising divisions away from its campus at 4820 150th Ave. N.E. in Redmond, said Jim Roberts, the city's deputy planning director.

Roberts said that Nintendo real estate executive Bruce Meyer confirmed the moves, and that Meyer also said the company plans to keep its corporate headquarters in Redmond.

Meyer didn't return phone calls seeking comment.

The company has about 756 employees on its Redmond campus. Rumors of plans to move some or all of them away from Redmond have appeared for four days on several gaming Web sites and blogs.

One analyst said the moves came as a surprise to him.

"I don't understand their reasoning," said John Taylor of Arcadia Investment Corp. in Portland.

"Most of the retailers that carry Nintendo's products are based in the center of the country right now, including Wal-Mart and Target. The only East Coast accounts that matter are Toys 'R' Us and Circuit City, with Amazon also coming on a bit."

On the other hand, he said, Nintendo's moves don't always make sense on the surface, even if they turn out to be wise.

"Naming their console the 'Wii,' bringing Pokemon over to the U.S. -- Nintendo works in strange and amazing ways, so you never can tell what they're up to," he said.

Nintendo of America houses its Redmond employees in company-owned buildings totaling 368,000 square feet, on a campus of 775,574 square feet that it also owns, according to records reviewed by Diana Brodie, senior planner for Redmond.

A basketball court of 6,354 square feet adjoins the campus.

The campus is on the west side of state Route 520, near several Microsoft Corp. buildings.

The company also owns a fifth parcel of 441,000 square feet, and six buildings on that parcel containing 168,500 square feet. It's leasing out that space, Brodie said.

Nintendo owns an additional, vacant parcel of 1.15 million square feet north of its main campus, she said.

The company in 2005 filed a development proposal to put about 550,000 square feet of new buildings on that vacant parcel. That proposal is still pending, but Nintendo has quit pressing for its approval, said Roberts, the Redmond deputy planning director.

"Bruce (Meyer) said he needed approval from Japan before he could go forward, and that has taken some time," Roberts said.

"It sounds like they're re-evaluating their options."

Reggie Fils-Aime Says, "Everyone's A Gamer"

Nintendo's Fils-Aime Ushers In Bay Area Office

Reggie Fils-Aime addressed those in attendance with a mission statement for the company, which recently announced several major new hires for the company's Nintendo's new Silicon Valley offices in Redwood Shores, California. "[Our message is] that everyone’s a gamer," he began.

The Nintendo of America president continued: "Whether it’s bringing joy and happiness to mothers and fathers as they experience Wii for the first time playing Wii Bowling or Wii Tennis, or whether it’s bringing a game like Nintendogs to a fifteen or sixteen year old girl who has a puppy that responds only to her voice."

Fils-Aime added: "That passion is what’s driving us, and that passion to be part of shaping the future is really why we’re here."

The event also celebrated the additions of executives such as the recently announced ex-Yahoo chief marketer Cammie Dunaway, who has been appointed as Nintendo sales and marketing EVP, and will be working from the Silicon Valley offices.

During the reception, Dunaway shared with Gamasutra that her nine year old son spontaneously wrote a letter of recommendation to Reggie Fils-Aime on her behalf when he heard she might make the move. New head of PR Marc Franklin, previously of Konami, was also in attendance.

Fils-Aime ended up his short speech at the Nintendo welcome event with what seems to be Nintendo's new mantra: "I challenge you that you too can be a gamer."

I already am a gamer so it is already too late to make me one but they can still make me into a nintendo fanboy which I still am not but I doubt that it will ever happen.
