Raist, how goes MGS4?

Do you love it yet? If you mentioned in the shoutbox, I missed it, so I want an eternal declaration of your undying love for it here, to forever spite Droog.

God dammit no.

Watching them from the hangway, I envied their certainty about the future.

What was really so terrible about it, anyways? Considering the last MGS I played was 3.

Act 1 was the best thing to happen to the MGS series.

Then they spend the rest of the game doing different, more boring shit instead of building on the winning formula they got in Act 1. Once act has you following a bunch of guys around for like a half hour with zero action, then the rest of it is cutscenes.

It opens well. Like really well. The first act is this active battlezone where you're just a neutral party. You can change the difficulty of the zone on the fly; helping out the refugees will make them help you out, draw fire for you, give you items, and it's great. If you do nothing you're essentially fighting two armies while trying to get by. It encourages the player to explore the mechanics.

The second act has this as well.

By the time act 3 rolls around that entire element of gameplay is removed in favor of Kojima deciding that the best way to end his grand Solid Snake saga was to incorporate off hand remarks from the end of MGS 3 and make them canon. No more unique mechanics. Just boring sections, pandering, and an absolutely terrible climax saved only by a final boss that is marred by its sudden control change. The game suddenly drops its unique stealth element in order to just play up for fanservice rather than any true narrative heft. The story retroactively makes MGS 3 a worse game, MGS 2 into damn near a retcon, and serves as a reminder that Hideo Kojima is the George Lucas of video games.

MGS 4 starts strong but halfway through it shits the bed and then rolls around in it while asking you to join in.

Then MGS Peace Walker happened and it was dogshit and then MGS V happened and it's also shit. There's the good trilogy and the shit trilogy and Kojima is the George Lucas of video games
