Why Pc gaming will never die

So there is always an article here and there about how pc gaming is dying and someday there will only be console gaming mainstream. Now while this is true in a lot of things as far as the gaming industry for consoles getting stronger as a gaming media mostly for the sheer simplicity in gaming in just putting the game in a playing; but never in a million years will pc gaming ever die. Its just a system that forever grows and grows and with ultimate backwards compatibility for the most part being strong with the exception of most dos games and recently with Vista.

Game consoles I admit are wonderful mediums for gaming; the controller with the exception of a few games is my favorite way to game. But the difference between Pc gaming and game consoles are this…. Pure unadulterated freedom. Now you probably are wondering what the hell I’m talking about. Game consoles for the most part can have games on it that are pretty free, but not fully. Now this just recently became rather clear to me with Manhunt 2 being banned on PS3 and Wii. Pc gaming on the other hand can have whatever game they want on it with out anyone banning it for this main reason… there is no governing for gaming on the PC minus the ESRB but that just gives it a rating, it doesn’t say whether the game can or cannot come out.

The PC has several AO rated games on it, most of them of course just cheesy pornographic games, but that’s what I love about the PC; You can have them on there and no one will tell you no. Game consoles are personally banning freedom of speech by banning Manhunt 2. Yes it’s a violent game, yes it’s probably overly graphic, yes Rockstar may have overstepped their boundaries a bit but who are they to say no? I admit that majority of people buying the Wii are adolescents who have to have their parents purchase it, but doesn’t Nintendo realize that this is silencing people’s freedom of speech.

The ESRB has done their job and given the game an AO rating like it probably deserves. I commend them for doing it honestly because it shows they still have credibility and it will probably silence those close minded zealots in Washington, but I can honestly say I’m very thankful they’re still releasing their game for PC unedited. It may be the only system its on until they edit it. Honestly, this feels a lot like Mortal Kombat to me.

For those who don’t remember Mortal Kombat back in the day was very controversial in that it was a very violent game. Nintendo didn’t want the blood in it and wanted some of the fatalities taken out for nicer ones. Genesis on the other hand still had the violent fatalities in it and with a code still had the blood in it. This is was a big reason why in the early 16 bit wars Sega was the champion. The ESRB, Nintendo, and Sony honestly I think will be hurting the sales of their consoles because of it and Pc gaming may jump up a decent percentage just because of it.

I may have gone a bit off subject but my point is there. PC gaming will always be a strong medium because of the freedom you have on it, where no one can tell you no just because it has something they don’t like and I commend Rockstar for realizing it. Freedom of speech everyone, remember if you don’t fight for it and use it will be taken away.

Agreed (More Or Less)

I agree with everything you have said, except on the freedom of speech part. While Nintendo and Sony may be silencing Rockstar's freedom of speech in the sense that they are not allowing Manhunt 2 on their consoles, they never said Rockstar could not make those kinds of games nor have they taken away their freedom to do so. Nintendo and Sony simply do not want AO rated games on their systems, which is their right because those (Wii, PSP, PS2, etc...) are their systems.
Also, you are right about PC gaming, for the reasons you mentioned as well as others that I will not mention as they should be rather obvious.
