(Scary) Iran planning to send ships near U.S. waters

(CNN) -- Iran plans to send ships near the Atlantic coast of the United States, state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported Tuesday, quoting a commander.

"The Navy of the Iranian Army will have a powerful presence near the United States borders," read the headline of the story, in Farsi.

"Commander of the Navy of the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran broke the news about the plans for the presence of this force in the Atlantic Ocean and said that the same way that the world arrogant power is present near our marine borders, we, with the help of our sailors who follow the concept of the supreme jurisprudence, shall also establish a powerful presence near the marine borders of the United States," the story said. The reference to the "world arrogant power" was presumably intended to refer to the United States.

IRNA cited the force's website as saying that the announcement was made by Adm. Habibollah Sayari on the 31st anniversary of the Iran-Iraq war.

State-run Press TV said Sayari had announced similar plans in July. In February, two Iranian Navy ships traversed the Suez Canal in the first such voyages by Iranian ships since 1979.

U.S. Defense Department officials had no immediate reaction to Tuesday's announcement. The United States has deployed fleets to the Persian Gulf in the past.

State-run Press TV, citing IRNA, said Tuesday's announcement came as Iran also plans to send its 16th fleet of warships to the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian vessels and oil tankers from pirates, who have hijacked dozens of ships and exchanged their crews for ransom.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured that its military might poses no threat to other countries, stating that Tehran's defense doctrine is based only on deterrence, Press TV reported in a story in July about the deployment of submarines to international waters.

The United States, while they love flexing their military muscle, at least (typically) puts their own citizens first.

Iran's leader recently appeared before the U.N. for a chance to address the concerns of the people of iran and instead went on a huge America bashing session, that made several members walk out (Interestingly, Canada's representativve was the first - I'd expext the American one to be first.)

Iran placing ships there? When you look at the whole picture, this is personal and it IS worth fretting over.

Members of the UN leave willy nilly for many many differing reasons, there have been numerous times when our (Australians) foreign minister or UN delegate has been conversing with a 3/4 empty room just because we're seen as irrelevant to everything which happens north of the equator or outside of the Pacific region, with this going on for a few decdes now do you see us putting ships and pointing at all those disrespectful shits who refuse to sit there and watch us validate our existence int he world?

Fiji had a coup a while back, military leader usurped control, was quite bloodless and as time goes on he's going a decent enough job that no one really gives a damn and his approval in Fiji is much like what the "legitimate" bloke had if not better, again, no warships, plenty of "it is disappointing..." and ra ra, Fiji has still refused to send a delegate or engage the Pacific Forum to be involved in matters, but still a sentiment to try and work with them, to foster legitimacy and work towards a solution for the betterment of the region is desired not a "lets send ships there and glare menacingly because there's a tyrant in our region withdrawing."

The scale is different, the spoken sentiment is different but the reactions are poles apart because frankly the US need such shows of strength to remain valid whilst internally they're failing horribly, it's similar as to why NATO involved themselves what with the debt crises currently being faced by several European countries all the while Russia, China, Japan don't move, don't bat an eye and they've not much broadcasted concerns with anything, similar story to us, in fact we're getting rewards from the international community (why, I dunno, it's fucking baffling) and if Fiji suddenly parked their fleet of canoes on the border and started spouting off how awful us Aussies are for making canoe jokes at them, I'd still be poking fun at people from New Zealand and not paying it any mind because they're not stupid enough to pull anything with severe backing from everyone else in the region.

Same thing goes with Iran, with all the pissing contests they have internally with other states in the region if you're really of the opinion that this is anything but a power play to get you to back off from their region than you are borderline retarded.

They have claimed themselves to be a nation at least as powerful as the US on multiple occasions. They've also actively been doing things to piss us off to the point of war constantly (the only reason we're not in there right not is because they control a strategic location that they could use to fuck us up, we have more than enough causus belli), or have you not been paying attention to any current events in the last decade?

The moment any of these smaller countries attempt this on the larger stage they get knocked the fuck out much like Georgia did with Russia stepping in, Libya did when Gadaffi crossed that line and made internal massacres public and much like Pakistan is pissy but not threatening anything but a "you need us onside" with the US breaching their sovereignty.

Region no, pointing it at Iran yes, anti US sentiment being high does give them some validity in the region but it's a moot point if someone like McCain got in and tried to annex it anyway or they're next cab off after Syria in getting the shit bombed out of them in the name of justice. Hard to say "fuck America" when you're hiding under a piece of rubble or fleeing to another state to be executed or rounded up for a trial like a dog.

Yeah, they've been funding anti-American terrorist groups for years now. Some of these groups are nearly an extension of the Iranian military.

Which isn't to say we've never employed similar tactics ourselves. But the point is that Iran's motions against the US go far beyond simple rhetoric and hostile troop movements.
