View Full Version : Good idea or cliche?

I recently started thinking about using RPG Maker again and giving making a game a shot once again. I wanted to run my idea by you guys to see what you think. I know the basic idea is somewhat cliche (but what game idea isn't now?), but I think/hope that mine has enough uniqueness to it to make it a decent game.
Anyways, the basic idea is this. There's a kingdom at war with a rebellion upset with king. At first it seems like just a normal political event, but deeper motives by mysterious individuals are eventually found.
I know, not the most original basis for a story, but bear with me.
The game starts with Rei, a fairy, oblivious to the war, wanting to go on an adventure as she's bored with her current life. The leader of her village sees that Rei is determined to go, so she lets her leave, telling her about an artifact that will let her stay n human form (Typically her species can only keep human form for a 24 hour period without having serious affects on their health ). She leaves and finds the artifact, and winds up taking part in the war.
The thing is... that's only one view of the story. My idea is to have diaries of the other characters in the game that you can find, and on finding them and completing the game for that character, you can then go back and play from the point of view of the character whose diary you found, giving you a completely different story.
Anyways, I just wanted to see what you guys thought of the idea... do you think it sounds good, or not?
(Probably won't affect whether or not I do make it, but I just wanted to get some feedback)

I think it's a great idea. It would be a bit difficult to impliment such a process with the RPG Makers readily available, but it's still a good idea, and it's not impossible to pull off. I'm made some RPGs in my time, as well, and it can be pretty fun. Though I used the PSX RPG Maker game. I'm assuming you talking about a PC RPG maker?

Yeah, but I don't think it'd be that hard to do... just have a switch for whether or not the diary is found, and if it's on at the end of the game, go to a list of which characters to play as, reset all the levels and items, and teleport them to their starting point.
EDIT : Whoops, thought you said "impossible" instead of "not impossible". Sorry. ^_^;;

Provided the RPG maker supports that kind of function. Still, I think it's be neat. Doitdoitdoitdoitdoitdoitdoit~ Now I'm in the mood to play one of my old games I created >.>

It'd go like this.
Character picks up a diary -> switch turns on -> character completes the game -> game goes back to a menu (without ending, this is the same game, not a new one), and asks which character to play as. If you've found the character's diary, they're selectable, and the game will start over with them.

I understand that. I'm just sayign that not all RPG maker programs will allow you to do that. Which is why I asked what RPG Maker program you're thinking of using.
All this talk about RPG Makers has given me a really good idea for a game plot and storyline. Yay, maybe I'll maker one, too. Though I can't use computer RPG makers -.-

either RM2K/2k3 or XP. I'm gonna try out XP first, I've never used it before. But I know that I can do it with 2K/3.

Well, I hope you do decide to at least write out a rough storyline. I'd love to hear your ideas. I'm starting to write my own right now. So many ideas... I can already picture almost an entire story in my head

*giggles* I've got the basic notes for the outlines of the character's and their stories written down already... I'll show them to you when I'm not trying to be quiet (my roommate's trying to sleep)

I can't wait. I'm really liking the way mine is coming out, as well. I'm trying to make it as original as possible while not being too "out-of-the-box"

Ok, I said I was gonna try to get some pics up of what I have so far, so here they are.
Keep in mind that I've only just started... so there's hardly anything at all.
Here's a tiny bit of the world map :

Here's part of the first "fairy village" (which would be why it looks more primitive, the actual human cities and towns will [hopefully :P] look more impressive).

And some areas inside the "buildings" :

So... that's what I got so far. Whatcha think? I'd appreciate any feedback.

mm pg13 yawnage. Honestly if i could be buggered using the nwn module maker id so make it non pg13.
I gather youve only created the basic templates and main character via that because your fairy village is well..empty of anything bar trees and 1 fairy :P Still looks alright, tho im reserving judgement until its closer to completion.

yeah, that's pretty much all it is. I'm working a little on adding more substance to the terrain.

Yeah, I'd said elsewhere that there was very little in anything right now... I'm trying to get the basic maps and areas down first before I populate them or get any of the gameplay done.
And yeah, that's the "main" character of the first game on the screen.
