Russian weathermen who get their predictions wrong could face stiff fines if one government minister has his way.

And repeat offenders could even be sent to jail, if Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu's plan is approved.

The minister was speaking in Irkutsk, which is on flood alert. He said he wanted weathermen to pay the price if they got forecasts wrong, because that led to emergency services being needlessly called out.

"If there is a disaster we send rescuers and equipment and spend money. But weathermen hold no responsibility - and do not think about having to defend the population."

Weathermen in Irkutsk have said the risk of flooding should subside soon. But according to Interfax, Shoigu "promised to squeeze compensation out of the weather forecasters if their forecasts proved wrong". - Ananova.com

Well if your job is predicting weather patterns, and you are being relied on to do your job right, if you fail I believe you should have something to lose. Considering what it takes to ready for a flood there better be a ****ing flood that could take at least 20 lives. Then again you shouldn't get mad at someone reading from a teleprompter.

someing as big as a flood would be hard to miss..i havnt ever known of anyone saying there would be then..there wasnt....the things weather people miss is rain or what days will be sunny...and for that they shouldnt go to jail...there not risking anyones lives unless there computers and such is 40 years out dated...and that would suck....lol

Well I think the government intended only for times where they would use money and resources at a high level. I don't think it costs much to carry an umbrella incase it rains. Although, I'm sure it cost alot to deploy flood protection vehicles and the paying the overtime to get the man power to fortify against the impending floods.

actually you cant really predict how heavy it will rain and how long with any great accuracy, yeah you can say 'OH ITS GONNA RAIN' but that doesnt say how heavy, how widespread and how long.
