The theory of a sixth sense is called many things.
It can be a gut feeling, or a soldier's intuition...
Whatever it's called - it is something that comes to many, but can't be explained. It can be a collection of all the senses, or a hidden animal instinct, or something more spiritual.
In martial arts it's practiced in differant ways - but many believe in this instinct all the same. I wrote the following earlier on the issue:
When one of our members is to be promoted to Shidoshi - he will sit in front of the Grandmaster and simply sit there. Hatsumi will take a sword and wait till the appropriate time, he will go into Jodan and project aggresive intent to strike you ( literally moving you with this intent ) and swing. There is no way for you to expect when it's coming - so you by that time must already be able to listen to your sixth sense and roll out.
Though we are forbidden to practice this or anything similar - we are allowed to train in the theory of what you call Ki, though this is left outside of training in the off hours. One such experiment is where a student will sit blindfolded at the edge of a room, and attempt to determine from where another student is coming to strike him. This is dependant on real threat, so if he fails to recognize it, or simply guesses and is wrong - he is thus attacked and hit.....
It is generally believed that this can't easily be trained, practice of it is more for an understanding of what it is. One truly learns it's way from life expirience - working in a dangerous job, living in a bad neighborhood, training in martial arts, or dealing with animals a lot.
This is still something in all of us - we can all recall times where our gut instincts have warned us ( even if we didn't listen ). Who know what one can do after gaining a good understanding of it.
