Here's what Clark Kent's superhero outfit in the forthcoming Superman Returns does not have: fake muscles; body armor; Day-Glo Spandex; protruding nipples — in short, the fashion-don'ts and deviations from the comic sources that have led to embarrassing superhero costumes in some comic-book movies of recent years. As this photo from the film's Australian set reveals, Superman's costume is pretty much as you remember it from previous incarnations. The muscles the suit displays are all those of 25-year-old Brandon Routh, the newcomer who stars as the Man of Steel.
Director Bryan Singer, who radically overhauled the costumes of the mutant superheroes in his two X-Men movies (replacing the yellow Spandex of the comics' costumes with black leather), told USA Today that this time he wanted ''something classic.'' Singer's Edna Mode is costume designer Louise Mingenbach, whose minor modifications included a slight muting of the blue and red color scheme, a modest reduction in the size of the ''S'' shield on Superman's chest, and the addition of the ''S'' logo to his belt buckle.
The story finds Superman returning to Earth after a long and mysterious absence only to find that Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) has put him behind her, while Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) again threatens the planet. The movie will be shooting for the next few months in Australia, with an eye toward a release date of June 30, 2006.
