Reports of a California tax under the Electronic Waste Recycling Act have caused quite a buzz. Under the act, machines equipped with a LCD screen 4-inches or larger are required to collect an additional $6 tax for toxin disposal purposes. The PSP, which launches on Thursday, would qualify for the tax. Kotaku originally discovered the tax, but no one the website contacted in California came up with a solid answer on whether the PSP fell under the tax's jurisdiction.
Sony, however, says no. "We are not currently required to collect a fee as PSP is a dedicated display device (not a separate computer monitor or CRT display)," says Patrick Seybold, a public relations representative for Sony Computer Entertainment America.
Rest easy, Californians; that $6 can continue burning a hole in your wallet.
