Vin Diesel's family flick beats out ''Be Cool'' -- Surprisingly the actor's first foray into comedy overtakes the ''Get Shorty'' sequel at the box office by Dave Karger
So far, 2005 has been a great year for action heroes who go soft. First, Will Smith broke the record for biggest romantic comedy debut ever with Hitch, and now Vin Diesel has topped the charts with his family comedy, The Pacifier, which grossed $30.2 million, according to studio estimates.
That puts The Pacifier ahead of John Travolta's Be Cool, which placed second with $23.5 million. The Get Shorty sequel featured Vince Vaughn, Andre 3000, Uma Thurman, and Cedric the Entertainer, but was no match for Diesel and a bunch of tykes.
Hitch, meanwhile, slipped 40 percent to $12.5 million, bringing its total to a fantastic $138.4 million, while last weekend's surprise No. 1 film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, saw a 45 drop in its second weekend to $38.1 million.
Rounding out the top five was the newly-minted Best Picture winner Million Dollar Baby, which saw a modest 16 percent bump to $8.5 million, bringing its total to $77 million. Though it beat The Aviator at the Oscars, next week Martin Scorsese's epic will win the race to $100 million.
