View Full Version : Female protagonists

Do you think that video games, especially RPGs, should start having female protagonists (main characters) instead of male? Not all the time, of course, but more often? OR at LEAST a choice between a male/female character...although, i mean by this, more games that have a female protagonist ONLY. There are some, of course, but still, games usually have male leads.
So, do you think it would be good if more games had female protagonists???

A lot of games has female protagonists, just not a lot of RPGs. It'd be really nice, as long as it's not them searching for love like stupid stereotypes.... Women are about more than that! ^_^;;

Yeah I actually got a letter put in PSM magazine about this a looooong time ago. I've noticed that there seems to be more than there used to. I would like to see more Knight-type chicks like Chris though.

They should make Red Sonya the movie, into some great rpg. Well use her character. Most of my first person killing games is a female lead. One is a demon killer, the other is a police agent that kicks ass. I try and find the games with a female lead, mostly because the creator wasnt' trying to really appeal to a specific demographic and was more free to do with what they wanted with the game. Of course Tomb Raider wasn't bad. Bah I'm rambling I have a class in 2 hours. going now

Yeah, i agree with you. The female lead should be a well-developed character with her own thoughts and personality and stuff, not just some girl who's out there without a personal motive, getting hit on by every guy (or girl O.o) she meets. And also, as matt pointed out, a lot of times female leads in games have certain "qualities" that are there to make it more appealing for a male audience, and sometimes can make it annoying to female audiences (one of my friends hated tomb raider for that reason). I'm not saying she has to look like some detstable shrew either, but they need more balance in female protagonists.
And i know more games lately have female leads, but out of them, RPGs have the fewest it seems, so i specified RPGs ^_^. Although RPGs have been getting more females in lead positions, there's always a male there to (S3 has 1 female to 2 males), and other RPGs allow you to pick between a male or a female lead. I think they should make some RPGs that make you have a female protagonist, and then develop a complete, deep, character in her, rather than having to give up some of that depth in exchange for developing a male character too.

Well if Laura Croft can run and jump with those things in front of her, more power to her. Honestly I like a good sexy female in the lead role. Don't forget that most RPG male lead characters are also sexy, in fact most characters in the FF series was sexy, in some way.
Ahem, Tifa.

oh gawd if you like smothering to death then yeah sure, you could lose a damn limb with the sizes they have its so friggen ridiculous.
But yes i quite like NWN's layout with both male and female options and portraits and such, only problem with it is it follows the same storyline just changes the names and refers as she instead of he and vice versa. But i agree that there should be more female leads who grab a weapon or whatever and cracks some damn skulls.

I agree more skull cracking females would be awesome!

The only main female RPG lead character I can recall is Aya Brea from Parasite Eve. I guess you could count slu- *cough* Terra too, but FF6 wasn't really big on "who's the mian character?". Not to mention Terra was who I had in reference to the charatcer who runs around searching for love (which she found in small children; "Mommy, why are you touching me there?")
So, I'd like to see some more Aya Brea characters!

i wouldnt mind a female..aslong as she wasnt a dumbass...and didnt say dumbass girly stuff all the damn time (-_-) but females are braver and 99.9% of the time smarter (that lost .1 is me:D)

Don't forget Shion...she was a female lead character too and so was Lenneth Valkyrie from Valkyrie Profile who was a total badass.
Am I the only person who has played Valkyrie Profile!? I feel so alone..

I think it would be cool if there were more female heroes... or, heroines i should say. I also think it would be cool to have more female villains.

03-18-2004, 03:40 AM
yeah I can only think of about 2 or 3 female villains...more would be nice.
Lancet Jades
03-18-2004, 03:51 AM
Yeah, most female villans i've seen are of one of two stereotypes:
A: A seductress who flaunts her sexuality and would do anyone to get what she wants.
B: Some detestably ugly old hag.

More female villains..... I dono. You'd expect it, ya know? It's like "Aw man... what, is it that time of the month?" That's most likely the deal with Ultimecia, anyway.
Sabin
03-21-2004, 12:55 PM
Yea, we should be able to choose from either one, I'd choose male most of time in the beginning...but that's just cause most of the time the male has better skills and stuff.
Lancet Jades
03-21-2004, 04:12 PM
Usually a male has higher physical power and defense, whereas a female has higher magic power and speed.
Sabin
03-21-2004, 04:15 PM
Yea that is exactly what I mean Lades, I want a higher physical damager, rather then a magical person, because often magic can be consumed (MP) and is gone before you know it, also cause I'm too lazy to choose a spell every command...thus making simply pressing "X" everytime easier for me...so that I choose the fight command everytime :rolleyes Damn my lazyness :chuckle
Lancet Jades
03-21-2004, 04:39 PM
Yeah, i too prefer physical might over magical prowess, lol. Fighters arent constrained by MP.

03-22-2004, 12:11 AM
I agree.. except for the magic users in Fire Emblem. They can be VERY useful.
Lancet Jades
03-22-2004, 12:21 AM
Magic in games like that usually IS more useful; than in normal RPGs. =/

03-22-2004, 01:27 AM
OH, ok.
MAgic is also very useful in suikoden, both in normal battles and war battles. ITs also usually useful early on in most RPGs, but gets less useful as you continue.
Grandia is another one where magic is useful all the way through.
Zelphiel
03-22-2004, 01:37 AM
Magic helps a lot in Grandia boss fights... I don't use it much in regular battles.
Lancet Jades
03-22-2004, 01:39 AM
Actually, i use magic in normal battles, and save SP for bosses. I usually save some uses of Alhealer for bosses too, but that depends.
Zelphiel

Liete is the only character that I use a lot of magic with.. the rest aren't that great.

03-22-2004, 02:35 AM
If you raise up Justin enough, he's pretty powerful. Feena too. Rapp sucks with magic though.
Zelphiel
03-22-2004, 03:15 AM
I focus on nothing but Justins attack. I don't bother with magic with him... other than what I need to get his techniques.
Ricdeau
03-22-2004, 12:23 PM
I try and give everyone good magic. When you get powerful magic it can be very handy. Also, if you find an area near a save point with monsters you can take em out with Burnflare or something, and then recover. Water magic is easy to build up to, but Im sure eeeeveeeeryooooooooneeeeeeee knows how to do it.
Zelphiel
03-22-2004, 12:25 PM
yeah, but I've never heard of anyone getting it to level 99. Feena has a technique that is level 99 water and wind....
Lancet Jades
03-22-2004, 04:15 PM
Yeah, but the water magic makes it sort of easy to level it up. Just get hit by a trap, and then cast Heal on everyone till you run out of MP, then go to a save and recover...

i loved grandia! it's a classic...and feena is so hot. miriya sterling from robotech started my fetish for green haired anime girls.

yeah.. Feena is hot. actually most of the women in Grandia are.

ewwww cg women what kinda ppl are you?
actually i agree with the both of ya woo dawg.
Well it would be fun to be a female cuz they could have like seductive or manipulitive skills or spells that can gave i an edge in the game o.O and males usually have liek physical power skills...that hurt alot but are weak to like spells and stuffs

Bumped? Very well, I'll play.
Female leads can rarely be pulled off successfully... lead characters are normally a stereotype, and guys are just easier to stereotype. What I do not want to see are gungho female berserkers that seem to be created more for women rights than to make a successful game... Chris was fine, Koudelka was not. Great game, ****ty opening.

Not always stereotypes
Just because ( No sexism offence) most popular games have male leaders and they always keep it that way to sell...
The Deity
01-12-2005, 06:45 PM
The leads are usually male because the majority of the gamers are males and most prefer to have a male leading character and typically a secondary female character for you to 'root' he will become an item with.
I don't really care what gender the race is, just if its a girl don't make the game uber girly like Final Fantasy X-2 did...

rayne from bloodrayne is hot...but dating her would proably be hazardous to anyones health. i find usaully in action games they try to make the girl leads scantily clad, nubile, and lethal while shouting wise cracks and sexaul innuendos at the poor hapless baddies that have the ai of thrown rocks. then you have the other extreme where the girl is a pop singer gun toting adventurer with naive innocence thus portraying her as being a summoner from surburbia that has never lived with hardship in her whole life. yeah, they really need to work on balancing out the lighter sweeter and darker sexier traits in lead females so their a bit of both yet not too much of either..
