Bizarre Truancy Mix-Up
March 11, 2004 — The Philadelphia School district says its trying to get to the bottom of an attendance mystery, involving an allegedly truant student and some truly mystifying grades.
Twelve-year-old Aubrey Wharton is at the center of a bizarre truancy case. The Philadelphia School District says his attendance at Gillepsie Middle School last year was deplorable. And Aubrey admits he never went to class at Gillespie. But his mother says, there's a good reason why.
So, what amounted to a paperwork snafu has resulted into a summons being issued, calling on Ms. Poindexter and Aubrey to appear in Common Pleas Court to face truancy charges.
Remember, Aubrey never went to Gillespie. And while he was given a couple of F's, he somehow garnered a D, a C, and even a B in gym class. The same report card says his behavior in those classes ranged from satisfactory to excellent.
Regina says she recently went in search of an explanation to Gillespie Middle School's principal with all the paperwork proving Aubrey was attending Renaissance Charter.
School district officials told Action News they're working to sort out this case and have Aubrey's tainted school record expunged -- but they still can't explain why Aubrey received grades for classes he never attended.
And, despite the fact that Regina Poindexter followed procedure to get her son into a charter school, she will still likely have to appear in court with her son on Tuesday and explain this case to a judge. Late this afternoon, school district officials thanked Action News for bringing the mix-up to their attention. The truancy case has just been dropped and Aubrey's school record cleared. As for the report card from the school he never attended, well, that remains under investigation.
