Lets say that an army of people came and got you, told you to choose their religion or they’d kill you.

Would you betray your faith, or die?

I would die before betrayal

I doubt it's quite that simple. Conversion at gunpoint does not exactly inspire faith in that deity, so even if you were willing to convert, that does not mean you could.

I doubt the question applies to me as an agnostic-atheist, but I could not worship a deity even if I wanted to. Of course, I would not do so anyway simply out of sheer defiance. I don't usually warm to people who try to force their opinion as truth simply because they have authority in one form or another. I'm willing to bet I'd even give my life for such defiance.

I'd just say yes to them and keep on believing what I want in my head and just do their thing on the outside.

I really mean betrayal or conversion of faith and religion, it any manner, they don’t have to have a gun, but even if it was a friend trying to talk you into it

So, in ANY situation would you give up one belief for another?

So, in ANY situation would you give up one belief for another? If you can actually say on this site that you would convert simply because a friend asks you, then you really don't believe in your religion. A person who actually believes their religion would not be able to say that they would convert at all, even if they actually would in certain situations. That's simply how the human mind works.

nah, id say yu give me woman and house and me be good friend yes cool

But no i dont believe rat shit with religion so they can say 'we kill you unless you worship god' and i would simply reply with a smartass sexual comment wabout their family and probably get my head blown off or beat to death. At least then i would know, that i shoved it up their religius behinds.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

And I'm telling you that a person would not be able to say "I would change the very foundations of my belief in exchange for my life." Even if a true believer would do so, a true believer would not know they would, either from denial or simply not knowing themselves well enough.

I am also telling you that it is not so easy to change said foundations, even at gunpoint, and even when a friend asks you to. It's just not that simple.

Even if treated as a pure hypothetical, though, it's still a flawed question because of my first point.

Under threat of death, I might SAY I would change my religion and stuff, but I wouldn't change what i truly beleive.

^What he said^

I would be willing to act like I had converted but in reality, nothing can force you to believe in something you don't.

I'd act as if I converted if my life depended upon it. I believe in self-preservation over the death due to the defending of a belief. Because I don't believe in an afterlife, then I don't see the point in dying for a belief because then you're dead and it does no good for you.
I wouldn't convert if a friend was trying to talk me into it unless I absolutely believe what they are saying to me is actually true.

That's just the way I look at it.

what I am saying though, is that it is more then just living and dieing, if you do have religion, to say that you have converted, even if you have not... is still betraying your faith.

if you do not have religion, to say that you do just to save your life, would be betraying your will, and your pride IMO

Betraying my honor or will to survive does not bother me. To me, what good is honor if you no longer exist? Since I do not have any beliefs about what happens after we die (I don't necessarily believe that nothing happens), I do not see the point of really dying for a belief.

Despite being adresed to Reoxy, I'll answer this too.

I don't beleive its betraying your faith to pretend to give it up in order to survive. Betraying it would be actually surrendering it forever just to survive (including even stopping belief in it).

I have no reserves in lying about my beliefs in something to survive, or to protect myself.

well depends on how they asked..i'd answer in a way that made me sound sincere yet it'd have a loophole to allow me to still do my own thing...if that didn't work i wouldn't just let them slaughter me...i'd take as many of them into the after life with me..that may sound stubborn to the point of being self destructive but my beliefs mean alot to me.

Well, I guess I'd probably pretend...It depends on the situation, I guess. Like at Columbine, if someone had a gun to my head and asked if I believed in God, I would say yes. I guess. I don't know. It depends. I don't have the slightest clue what I'd do. I...really don't know.

I don't believe much in suicide, so i'm willing to go to certain levels - but there are other things I'm not willing to do, such as cannibalism.

Probably not though in a gun situation it'd be a little more difficult to just say "I choose death"

Probably not though in a gun situation it'd be a little more difficult to just say "I choose death"

that depends entirely on mental processes at the time, its like the rat cornered by cat thing.

Cat chases rat into corner
rat goes right im fucked, stfu and attacks the cat
the cat goes sweet jesus wasnt expecting that and gets injured at least and the rat either pisses off or dies.

now in this situation it'll mostly play out like this

person gets kidnapped by armed schmuck in a robe
person goes huh what the fuck
bandit then speaks in tongues waving his gun around
person either
a - shuts up
b - says what the fuck u on about foo
c - co operates like a good invertibrate

bandit then
a - kicks your ass for not reply
b - kicks your ass for talking smack
c - doesnt have an ass to kick since your already sucking him off

NOW given the above as purely hypothetical, unless your a missionary to bible bash in 3rd world countrys they wont kill you cuz its against their religion.

OMFG what was that lol? So for this to actually work youd need to be struck down by some higher power (not bloody likely) or killed by some random fanatic because instead of being nice first you chose to be a jackass. Then, well, its your own fault.

Well, I'm not too sure about. I guess it depends...I really don't want to die for any reason, but I guess if it came down to that I'd probably die...

I think the real question that needs to be answered here is what really constitutes "betraying" one's religion. Is it merely the act of saying you'll give up the religion, or would it be actually surrendering your beliefs entirely?

I'd say fully surrendering your beliefs, but I've known some people who would say that even lieing, and saying that you don't beleive in it [anymore] would be betrayal...

I would die before i betrayed my religion because i believe that i will be better in gods sight than if i betray my religion....

Depends really. If it was ''Die or worship [insert entity here] every day for the rest of your life'' I would choose death. If it was ''Die or be a Christian/Catholic etc as they are today'' I would pretend. Depends what the world would be like if this situation ever happened.
