What religion are you?

I'm a very liberal Christian. I beleive in God, and follow the core christian values, but i live my life, and worship God in my own way.

Atheist. Yep, that's me. But it's mainly because the only religion I know enough to judge is Christianity. I want to have my freedom and make my own smart decisions anyway, not have someone make them for me.

this is what i dont get, isnt being an athiest the same as being in a religion except its based on no religious aspect therefore defeating the purpose of calling having no religion Atheism?

I mean i myself have been baptised and by that right should be a roman catholic but since that wasnt my choice i prefer to remain neutral under all religions and none at the same time. After all there are valid and invalid points in all religions so therefore to me there is no substance for me to place my belief in, so henceforth i prefer to remain under the category none, not Athiest.

ChibiArisu
01-19-2004, 09:49 PM
Though, in some ways, it might be good to be forced, because at least you have something to believe in, and people to talk to when you have questions about the religion...though I have no room to say, I'm not baptised, and am not categorized as any religion..

Zelphiel

i think forcing into religion is wrong, simply because religion is meant to be what YOU believe, not what your parents believe. Just because you're baptised doesnt mean diddly-squat. Its your thinking not your being splashed by water when you were a baby. Sorry if im offending anyone here, but its just my view.

To be athiest means you belive in nothing, its not considred a religon there for it fits under the catagory of no religion, when most think of religon, they think of a group of people that belive in some type of god, athiest dont belive in such a higher power so we are not considered a religon

NONONO!!! Atheism means you don't believe in a supreme being (ie. God, Allah, Buddah). Therefore it IS in a category... yeah, so I'm more like a "Me" religion ^_^ I have my own ideas and morals, I don't believe what other people tell me.

lol, our particular beliefs are pretty similar, except i DO beleive in a supreme being, i.e. God. But i dont live the way the church, or even the bible tells me to live. I beleive in the core christian beleifs, such as loving fellow humans, doing good by them, and so forth. Its much easier to do that than if you follow ever little thing in the bible. =/

like I've said many times before on other forums. Athiests DO believe in something... the non existance of a supreme or divine power. So, therefore they believe in something, nothing. So, technically Athiesm is a religion because of the devout belief that there isn't a god.

I disagree. Atheist is just a word to describe someone who has no religion. Atheist is no religion, because Athiests believe in no higher power or divinity. Btw, Buddhists dont believe in a God, rather buddhism is a way of life. The Buddha was a real person, not something you read about and decide whether it was real or not.

Religion: 1 the worship of God or Gods
2 any specific system of belief, worship, etc

Therefore similar to an ideology except focused around religious 'activities'. Calling ones self an Athiest is a specific belief in no religion and therefore by the dictionary meaning is classified as a religion. Because itis a following of peopel who share the same ideals about the same religious issue that there is no religion.

Simply put Religion is based upon Theories and 'facts' and the theory that there is no higher power makes those who call themselves Athiests a Religion.

I see that a few folks here are blaming bad things that some so called "christians" might do on the so called "God" Well, is it really God's fault that false prophets who say they worship him go off and pull stupid crap? No, it isn't. A religion isn't based on one person's wrongdoings.

i have a thing against all religious people. unless you've had your own experience with god(like he actually came down and talked you you or he made you float or something) then you're stupid for believing. i mean, you can think "hey, maybe there's a higher being" but if the only proof you have is a bull**** 2000 year old book written by sexist friends of a so called messiah(yes, that's christains but i'm also targeting jews and muslims) then there's something wrong with you. not to be mean but think about it. you put all this faith into something that has never been proven to you? if you believe in god that's ok but to devote your life to him or even every sunday morning is rediculous. and mrmans are worse than jehovas witnesses. dont' think i'm yellign at you if you ay you belong to a religion. honestly, there are only a few people who are like what i just said. the rest i'm fine with cause they're either not to into it or they're lying about their faith or something like that.

Dono, but I would assume that, by definition, swearing is "using god's name in vane". Therefore if you swear, you're making fun of religion? Gawed Demmit! Jesus Christ! For the love of god! Nante Koto Da!!!!! ^_^
Forcing religion on people is bad, especially if the religion being shut out is a native religion, those religions are really good, no hidden extras and sub-text and hidden agendas. And they work for anyone! Christianity tells stories told before people knew about dinosaurs (which now brings problems with fact being taught in school because it "contradicts" the bible) and loving eachother, but spiting certain others. But native religions just tell of respecting eachother to build a better community.

well an atheist can still believe in a higher power ..i mean look at the marvels of science and technology. an agnostic believes in a higher power they just don't claim it to be one thing or the other. my beliefs lean towards paganism and the study of chi and mysticism. since our bodies naturally hold a type of energy signature and we can draw in more life essence from the enviorments around us i don't think physically dying means the end of one's existence. i believe there is a greater energy that causes things to grow, die, and be reborn and we are apart of it.

I'm really not sure... I know there's been a decline in the Catholic church in the past few decades. As for all religions I'm not sure which denominations in each of them are the largest.

here's this though...

the religions as a whole with estimates of all their members.

the global top 21

Christianity: 2 billion
Islam: 1.3 billion
Hinduism: 900 million
Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist: 850 million
Buddhism: 360 million
Chinese traditional religion: 225 million
Primal-indigenous: 150 million
African Traditional & Diasporic: 95 million
Sikhism: 23 million
Juche: 19 million
Spiritism: 14 million
Judaism: 14 million
Baha'i: 6 million
Jainism: 4 million
Shinto: 4 million
Cao Dai: 3 million
Tenrikyo: 2.4 million
Neo-Paganism: 1 million
Unitarian-Universalism: 800 thousand
Rastafarianism: 700 thousand
Scientology: 600 thousand

As for me, even though I have a spiritual side, I don't claim any of those groups.
