I'm having a problem my laptop. It is an ASUS F8Sp-X1 NoteBook which I got three years ago. The issue I am having is that lately when I put in the charger to charge the battery the laptop goes from 'running on battery' to 'AC mode' meaning it is charging and the little orange light on the laptop is on, meaning it is charging. Sometimes it changes modes when I do something as slight as moving the monitor. I tried changing chargers to the old one that came with the laptop, and that worked for a few days but today when I was plugging the old ASUS charger into the power outlet, I saw sparks from the wire. I unplugged it instantly and saw that there was a slightly exposed wire that might also be broken. So I went back to the charger I have been using for a year and a half now, the one that constantly switches from charging to not being registered as plugged in. It is one of those universal chargers that you can change the voltage and the little plug that goes into the laptop. Now, however, the laptop doesn't even register that it is plugged in meaning that I can no longer charge the laptop.

My question is is this a problem with the charger or the laptop? Do I need to get a new charger or laptop or battery? I don't have anyone with a similar laptop so I can't use their chargers to see what the real issue is. At the moment the laptop is nothing more than a paperweight since I can turn it on, but I can't charge it so there's little point in using it.

I had a similar issue with my old phone. My charger was the issue, since other chargers worked. But my phone wasn't innocent: killed my new charger within 2 months.

If it's not registering as plugged in at all, the issue can't be the battery, since it is possible to use a plugged-in laptop with no battery (according to a friend)

In my experience issues with charging laptops have always been problems with the chargers.

If it's not registering as plugged in at all, the issue can't be the battery, since it is possible to use a plugged-in laptop with no battery (according to a friend) Yeah, my brother doesn't even put his battery in unless he's not plugged in because he doesn't want to kill it with overcharge.

I'll try picking up a charger on the cheap and see if that solves the problem. Other sources have blamed the charger as well so here's hoping.

Same thing happened to my girlfriend, and it was her charger.

The 'cheap' charger cost me $110.

But it worked! Oh god it feels good to be on my old trusty laptop again. All my important research data was on it and everything!

that's the problem I had with old computers, the charger...
Glad it worked though...
