This forum needs a revival and I'm gonna do it single handed if I have to. Now I like comics. I like them a bunch. So what I am going to do is every week I will talk about a comic you should maybe check out. It won't be a Spider Man or a Justice League comic because those are Marvel and DC. This is for indie comics published by studios like Image. I might make an exception for things like Vertigo because sometimes there are just awesome comics. There won't be any iconic superheroes and stuff because frankly everyone knows about those.
This topic's sole purpose is to encourage more people into reading and discussing comics.
And if you're too cheap to shell out the cash to purchase them, well find yourself a copy of CDisplay and come talk to me. But fuck, guys, support the comics industry.
So let's start this bitch off.
WEEK ONE: THE SWORD
Written By: The Luna Brothers
Drawn By: The Luna Brothers
Issues: 24
Publisher: Image Comics

Dara Brighton is a college student living happily in Virginia with her parents and older sister. Her father teaches a writing course at the college and his students all enjoy his lectures. Dara is well on her way to earning that art degree so all in all, life is good.
But of course that all changes when three mysterious people show up and murder Dara's family with supernatural powers.

Like most revenge stories, Dara ends up surviving the grizzly murders (in a rather ironic fashion, no less). She finds a sword underneath her house and sets out on a quest to find out who those people were and why they murdered her family. Of course things never go as planned and soon Dara is labeled as a menace to society, no doubt due to the superhuman powers she seems to gain whenever she is holding The Sword.
In a way it is kind of like Kill Bill, in that the main character at one point uses a sword to kill a bunch of people in order to get to a betrayer. At the core it is a revenge tale though there are enough interesting spins to make it something better than the sum of its parts.
This is helped in many ways by the characters who aren't Dara. In fact, the bad guys were, in my opinion, far more entertaining and endearing, especially as the series developed and backstories were revealed. But the characters, while passable, are not the strongest thing about The Sword. In many ways, it is the action and scenarios that Dara ends up in that make the series worth reading.

It's a fairly entertaining series and a quick read since things happen rather quickly. If that makes any kind of sense at all.
The art style I wasn't big on at first, but it did grow on me after a while and it certainly is colored well and there is a lot of attention to detail in some of the action scenes.
The creators say it is a modern fantasy story and I can buy that. There's certainly fantasy elements present throughout the story but it never feels like it is tacked on just because it's "totally fucking awesome brah".
Although I could be wrong because this:

is something I thought was "totally fucking awesome brah"
So if you like chicks cutting things up with swords and supernatural powers, check out The Sword. It's worth a read.
