well first of all sorry i have been gone so long. lol. part of this reason is because i've been playing ffx and x-2 (yeah though it is corny i do want to see what happens.) but i'm off topic.
anyway i recently got onimusha 3. i had looked at this game with grim cynicism simply because i had heard it dealt with time travel and it had an annoying fairy. surely i was convinced capcom had lost their minds. still, onimusha 3 is the last game in the series. also it had dropped in price. so yeah i bought it and let me tell you i could not be happier. the truth is yes the game deals with time travel. however despite this it still has a stirring deep story with lovable characters that not only have to deal with nobunaga's hordes of demons but personal struggles very much like the ones we ourselves face. the fairy ako is actually a tengu ( japanese fey that have raven wings) and surprisingly i found myself liking her alot. to me she was both adorable and very helpful, finding items and aiding the heroes with various beneficial spells that are gained by waring vests charged by her magic echo stones.
anyway the gameplay revolves around ako delivering items between samonoske (the samurai hero from the first game) and jacques (a french military officer) who are both stuck in different time eras. as before in the onimusha series you can level up sam and jacques weapons which all have different elemental properties. also as before the combat is fast, furious, and addictive. people famaliar with onimusha know you increase your stats and abilities by absorbing souls from fallen demons. a few new game mechanics have been implemented such as jacques using his whip like weapon to latch onto helpful mechanical fireflies to swing across chasms indiana jones style. later you can be jacques fiancee michelle who uses different guns and grenades. i thought at first she'd be the only character not able to use souls but i was relieved when she found an oni bracelet that allowed her to do this just like the other two lead heroes. while michelle can't upgrade her weapons she can still absorb spirits to gain back health and even experience that can be transferred to jacques or samansoke later on. playing as her is a nice change from using the usaul melee style weapons.
the only gripe i have is the enemies get extremly cheap in their tactics later on even hitting you while you are still down. those who thought onimusha 2 was a bit too easy won't have much to gripe about this time around. the game is very hard and many of the boss battles are challenging though by no means impossible. the graphics of course are gorgeous so long as you don't instantly compare them to the x-box. i found this game to be just as fun as ninja gaiden save for the fact you can't jump, flip, and run on walls. if you're looking for a great game with alittle depth and alot of action pick this one up. i only hope devil may cry 3 ends up being as good as this title was.
