View Full Version : Swollen Gum

Well, not so much my gum...Part of it, but also a bit of the roof of my mouth.
The other day. While eating a pie...I burned the inside of my mouth.
Really badly. The pie should have been cold and...Actually was on the outside but I guess it hadn't cooled completely.
I just shoved a chunk in my mouth...I bit on it and...The gravy inside was still boiling. Honestly, I imagine that drinking scolding hot water would feel the same.
Now some of the inside of my mouth has swollen from the burn...And it just hurts.
I used some of my antibacterial mouthwash and that eased it a little but...It's still really sore.
I dunno if there's anything that would ease it.
I was thinking of "Bonjella" but I dunno if that would work for burns in your mouth.
I thought it was just for ulcers.
I didn't know if you guys knew of anything.
Heck. Even some home remedy.
I guess I shoulda tried honey...Honey seems to have miracle powers...

Ouch, burns suck. I did something similar a while back and just shoving an ice cube (or something similar, popsicle, etc.) in there every now and then to numb the pain really helped for me, can't really say how or if it will help you.
Avoid anything else that is hot, spicy, salty, or citrus-y. Cold food is the way to go.
Treat the burn with an over-the-counter pectin ointment or topical mouth analgesic containing benzocaine. Put the medication directly to the burn to protect as well as heal.

If you don't plan on visiting a dentist for specific treatment, I'd go baby food for a bit, ie liquids or mushy foods you can swallow easily as that way you aren't using the roof of your mouth or chewing constantly to irritate the affected areas and you also limit the abrasiveness or prospect of getting food caught in any groove formation and you also avoid drawing blood (for instance in having one of my 2 molars removed because they were dead I had to not eat anything with an edge like potato chips because they would reopen the wound). I've got this random problem in that sometimes my throat isn't as slick as it should be and dries out thus making solid food feel like it's sandpaper which is solved by simply drinking fluids, so that's the premise I'm using in this since I imagine a burn would act in the same manner just more constantly.
I'd also agree with Irving, definitely stay away from salty items, heavy citrus concentrations and hot spices as they will just attack the exposed sections of your mouth, continue using the antibacterial mouthwash (to remove any germs or anything which may decide to fester in the wound through eating) and it should heal itself over time and effort. As always though you could just visit the dentist to explain your problem and they probably could prescribe something for the pain and to help heal the gum areas if you can't take it anymore.

Yeah. Dun like Dentist. Plus they charge way too much. The swelling has gone down quite a bit now.

Nope, nothings gonna heal it except time. I'm guessing you got a blister type water filled thing from it too? I get that all the time even from just plain hot food >.>

Whenever I have pain in my gums I just use pain killers, I recommend aspirin as it seems to work best for aches and sore spots.
As for home remedies, as you said, honey. Just take a teaspoon of warm honey and keep it on the sore spot, I doubt that its going to heal it any faster but it should reduce the pain. Yogurt and peanut butter are two that might help, but as remedies they're iffy...sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.
