View Full Version : New Thread Initiative

EF, like so many other smaller sites, has always had a problem with maintaining a steady influx of new threads (members too, but that's another topic).
So here's an idea I propose, to generate a better influx of new threads without having too many at once (leading to a drought afterwards), and without compelling people to make a ton of threads at once.
How about each person here make it a point to post a new thread every 2-4 or so days, for about 2 new threads per week per person. This ensures a good rate of new threads without going overboard (like Altima tends to) and without overly taxing people to come up with thread ideas.
Of course, this isn't required by any means, but if we all try this, new ideas shouldn't be too difficult to generate, and it'll ensure a nice stream of activity. Just make sure that even if you don't post new threads as often, that you at least participate in others posted (which should go without saying).
Game-based threads (in the Gaming Sector) are of course preferred, but threads anywhere are fine.

No, Droog.
Seriously. Just keep mindful of ideas for threads and when you stumble on something to post about, post it. That's why I suggested a thread every 2-4 days, it keeps a steady flow without overdoing it, or going too long. I don't want people to feel like they're compelled to post, or being forced to make new threads, but rather to do it to try and boost EF's activity some.
If we can boost activity, new members are more likely to stay (and stay active more importantly), thus inviting more people, and so on. And we're always in need of new members.

I got a mention, i'm so happy! I am already on this as im sure you noticed by now. I'll try to always come up with new ideas for game threads or any other thread that seems enjoyable.

I guess you can't, but you can just pm them to me old chap.

Yes, I agree.
Altima, you've got to stop making loads of new threads at once. Space them out over a few days, not all in the same hour.

Well the Sports threads hardly count as threads as no one besides myself, Deity and occassionally Kaffee even really talk about sports at all to any kind of length.
I can always think of threads to create. I have to make them when I think of them or I might forget what I was going to create. Also without counting the few sports threads I only really created 4 topics since this thread was created.
In the end even by spacing them out the activity won't really increase too much it will merely be steadily maintained at its current level really.
The only way for it to increase is to have threads to post in and to get new members with new ideas and from different backgrounds in order to post in the topics we already have and to create new ones we have either never had before or haven't seen in a long time.

Add Parallax to that list too, when he gets on at least.

That's the point - to maintain activity. Rather than having 88 active threads one day and 5 the next, it'd be better overall to have like 10 - 20 quality threads going at once consistantly.
The other issue is what I've dubbed "Toothpaste threads," after the most mundane thread I ever saw on EF, courtesy of Laggy - "What flavor toothpaste do you use?" Basically, threads that ask an obvious question, usually about something IRL, that have no way of generating a discussion. Gaming threads typically don't do this, because when you ask a question about, say, what's the most joyous occasion in a video game, the responses could lead to other people remembering that scene and talking about it. I very much prefer opinion threads though, like my favorites of yours, the top/bottom 5 video game / anime (characters).
There's also Anything Goes threads, but those aren't something that turn out well when people force it. It has to come naturally, like art.

What Yvl said.
Altima, please stop posting a bunch at a time. Limit it to 4 or 5 total in one day, or maybe even closer to 2-3, so they are spread out over more days. I don't want to have to start policing the starting of a ton of boring, mundane threads (honestly, like your thread postings in those situations usually are) as a flood of spam.

Generally American sports are only of interest to Americans, it's also generally why you don't see myself or Jethro discussing other sports because the scope for discussion other than "pfft that's a fag sport" is nada, leaving as lades said an immediate end to any and all discussion on the subject.
Sports unless you're bringing in loyalties on any competitions stifle quickly.

one anime thread went that direction once. even though I ended up being part of that conversation I had to close it.

unless it's croquet. there's always immense global interest in that.

Regarding sports, i'll be happy to post any soccer threads. There's been plenty of news lately regarding the latest transfer window that just closed. It would mainly be regarding the English Premier League though because most of you wont care about the A-League and the MLS is pretty shit so i wont even bother discussing that lol

Well, I have to say new threads recently seem to be decent, but more is always nice. Just reminding people about this to try and post a bit more, and not too many at once (like certain Altimas we know).

Well even an Altima thread is better than no threads at all or something like that. I really need to find some new people to drag here, as hopefully that will end the thread and post dilemma we have a bit.

Well, really, the big problem with your spurts of threadmaking isn't the topics (like they sometimes are, yuo and laggy used to be bad at that), but rather you make too many at once. Instead of making 5 or 6 at once, space those 6 out over 2-3 days. Give people a chance to reply and maybe think of their own topics (even if they end up making ones you had planned), as it helps them not be overwhelmed and maybe prompt them to make threads of their own.
Not that making threads is bad, of course, but it's more helpful in general to space them out, even if over two days instead of one.

Indeed. Understand that you can't make EF active on your own.
Also, new people = yes.

Sorry, it's hard to post on my cell phone and I can't leech my neighbor's net very often. Plan on getting the net back soon though, absolute latest being February. Right now I'm saving up to visit Leigh for our anniversary (on the topic of members and activity, I'll remind her to come back) so the net isn't my priority.
