View Full Version : Very early thoughts on Age of Conan

Age of Conan is a new MMORPG that came out about a week ago. I wasn't looking forward to it. I had heard only bad things about it - like that it was basically the same thing as WoW, or that a beta tester a friend knew said it sucked, and things of that nature. The only thing good about it I heard was the graphics being run on the Oblivion engine and it being M rated.

And indeed, it is alot like WoW - skill trees, similar layout, and probably a couple other things I've missed. And of course, it is an undisputed fact that WoW is a boring game due to the fact that nearly every class can suceed by repeatedly pushing a single button. I wasn't too sure about this. It sounded boring.

That's not the case in this game. You have three different normal attacks - front and both sides. You also can dodge attacks by tapping a directional button twice.

Sounds meaningless, right?

Here's the catch - your opponents have sides they favor, which can leave openings in one or two of their sides. Basically the enemy has three shield-like icons that are distributed overhead or to either side. If an enemy strongly favors the left side, all three shields will be there, leaving the center and right completely open. And these are pretty major defensive bonuses or penalties.

On top of that, the enemy adapts to your fighting style. If you continuously hit him in the right, he'll shift his defenses to the right. If you attack all over, he'll distribute his defenses evenly (which you don't want).

Sounds nice, right?

To top that off, those three attacks are by no means your only attacks. You also get "combos" which are attacks with special effects or extra damage. Most of them are, unlike any MMO I've ever played, not just a point and click kind of activation. They mostly require you to attack in the correct direction for it to work, so the enemy's defenses do factor in there as well. And keep in mind - I'm only level 5 out of 80 at the moment. So far there's only been attacks that require one attack in a fixed direction, but I'm certain that it will change soon.

And that's just the battle system.

Out of combat abilities are amazing too. I'm an assassin, as always, and apparantly I need a certain level sneak skill (gained by allocating points) in order to sneak in certain places. I can pretty much only hide in the shadows right now.

The graphics, I'm not at all fond of. They're great and all, but WAY over the top. This computer is fairly well equipped and it still lags like all hell trying to run graphics on the lowest setting. This is something Blizzard did right that Funsoft and Sony did terribly wrong - MMOs SUCK when they have over-the-top graphics. There's enough pressure on you as it is to keep up with other people and deal with lag, so it makes no sense to isolate the game from people who can't afford or didnt have the knowledge to have an insane graphics system.

And the girls' shoulders are too broad so they look like men from behind, so that sucks too. Not exactly supposed to be a feminine game though.

Later in the game, you can apparantly build your own guild fortresses and towns, or destroy other guilds'. I'm not that far yet.

9.8/10

In any case, this game has by far the best combat and abilities system I've ever seen in a game.

How much is the fee?

Rainbow Dash

$15 a month for the monthly pay. I didnt do the math but I assume it's $12 or $13 for the extended plans.

I'd reduce that score by like 6 points just for the monthly fee. Fuck the monthly fee.

It's an MMO, I'm not going to give it a low score because it has a monthly fee, which pays for the updates that give MMOs such longevity to begin with.

Hello? Look at a gazillion other free MMOs out there that are still thriving.

I did. I looked at ALL OF THEM, thanks to Mean Lady, and the only one so far that was half decent was RAN, which is now dead. All the rest are repetitive as all fuck, poor motivation to play, no progressing story, and certainly no groundbreaking updates. You're just kinda thrown in the game and told to kill X amount of a certain creature and come back, rinse and repeat. They're also infested by repressed 14 year olds whose parents think video games are evil and wont dare to pay a $15 a month, despite it being a huge savings compared to $40 per game, once or twice a month.

Well, Maplestory gets upgraded more often, but assholes flocked to it since it was free and the community kind of sucks now. It may sound childish that I play it, but meh, with P2P I play too much to get my money's worth, with free, I can take a break anytime.

Not necessarily assholes, just children that probably arent living under the best circumstances.

Hereupon I give you one amazingly popular MMO that, although you buy a copy of, you don't pay a monthly fee~

Guild Wars.

What say you of that? I see that get updated fairly often, and they don't charge a monthly fee to their players.

Has Guild Wars improved? I played the original and found it not all that fun.

Plus, one could argue that the expansions double as fees. One time, sure, but at a higher price than a $15 per month.

Guild Wars looked terrible. While I admit that it looks better designed with more innovations than the trash out there, I barely even can classify it as an MMORPG. The whole premise behind MMOs is that you are forced to play with some of the biggest assholes and perverts you've ever met whether you want to or not, and with a single player option, it gets rid of that thrill. Same applies to the Diablo series.

The battle system didnt look too thrilling either.

I've found it exceptionally fun after getting past the beginning stage, where sometimes you get some crazy and outlandish missions in the remote areas and whatever. I find those pretty fun. Also, killing other players. That's awesome.

There's three expansions at around $40 each. That's less than three months, each. Counting the main game, paying for all four games up-front is around a year's worth of online fees. I've been playing for much longer than that. So even with all this, I've got more for my money than I would have had I had to pay per month for usage of the game.

And as far as I'm concerned, PvE is miserable in every MMO. PvP is where it's at.

If you want to continue this, please do it in your own thread, though. It's way off topic, and I dont want another review thread of mine to get hopelessly off track.

Well then, here's a question I just can't seem to get answered from anyone else. Can you get the game off some website of theirs for download, or do you actually _have_ to buy a hard copy?

Rainbow Dash
05-29-2008, 09:41 AM
I think you need a hard copy. Downloading the game, especially for you, would be damn near impossible anyway as it's 32 gigs.

Jesus Christ, 32 gigs? D:

Rainbow Dash

Indeed, another reason I wish they had not overdone the graphics.

Nickelback

No game I have can even touch 32 gigs. Not even Crysis. Good lord. Barely all of Valve's games in the Steam folder reaches 30. That's just amazing.

No wonder those 500gb drives are selling so cheap!

I'm having a real issue with the graphics now. I've lowered everything almost as low as it can possibly go and I'm only getting 7 - 15 FPS. And I'm on a laptop, so it's impossible to upgrade my graphics card. I spent fucking $2000 on this thing to have everything as good as possible but it's all useless because the graphics card isnt powerful enough.

Yvl, can you adjust the screen resolution of the game? It's easier to run high end graphics on a low resolution than middle range graphics on a high resolution. After adjusting the game's size, simply change your desktop to the same size so the quality doesn't plummet too much. I do this on All my fullscreen games now, lets me crank the graphics and still get a smooth play. Granted I'm not sure how the logic in this works since the low resolution fits the whole screen at any screen size, but just looks better when you change your settings first.

I can, but from the looks of it I dont even have the minimum requirements. This isnt just some minor tweaking that needs to be done.

I so have to try that out!

Awesome tip, Saph! ^-^ Even if I have >.> No interest in this game...
But it'll come in handy for other games!

But it'll come in handy for other games!

Note, it doesn't work for ALL my games; quite a few of them auto resize on their own, etc. But it DOES make Oblivion run on Ultra high settings without even the slightest (EDIT: Okay, so I can get choppy when fighting way out in the open, or if I'm blowing up 20+ people with one ridiculous spell) bit of choppiness, which counts for something.

Damn, that sucks. and you can't upgrade since it's a laptop? That's a real shame... 15 FPS sounds unbearable, that that's not even looking at that it's 7... well, I did hear the launch was a greater success than anticipated, maybe it's just laggy from everyone clogging the earlier zones? Or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

Nah, I've been in an instance most of the time doing beginner quests. I'm going to need to do something about not being able to play these games, because if it interferes for a second with WAR, something's dying.
