View Full Version : Arm yourself...

Let's say you were nobility from another culture from another time...,
and let's say the period is pre-colonial, and you've been called for war.
As is the custom in any culture - you would ready a riding animal, armor, a main weapon, a side weapon, and pretty much anything else you'd need depending on the style of you combat...

So what would you arm and fit for yourself,
and what culture would you wish to have been reared...?
Medieval western or eastern european..., Nordic, Saracen, Samurai,
Jin ( or any major chinese faction ), Hindu...

Pretty much what would you arm yourself with considering...?
What would your riding animal be...?
How would you be armed and armored...?

Let's see... I'd be the Medieval Western; riding on one of the purest purebred steeds; I'd wield a two-handed broadsword and I'd be wearing standard chainmail.

I'd love to have been in the medieval times in europe. Especially when the newer and improved knights armor was being made from stronger materials.

I'd be wielding a strong broad sword forged by one of the greatest weapon smiths money back then could buy. I'd have a noble steed, most likely full brown if I could get one...maybe with a white patch on its face. And since guns already existed back then as well...I think pistols too....I'd probably also carry two hand pistols. Both loaded fully before going anywhere. And use them as a last resort if my sword it knocked out of my hands and i'm knocked on the ground as my attacker is ready to stab at me through a opening through my armor.

Intead of a Sword though.

And of course I'd be riding.

Not really a Nordic Axe, but oh well.

Err...no guns existed at the time - pre-colonial...,
at least not pistols...

The closest thing would be a long bore matchlock arquebus...

Medieval european knight, wielding a lance (for main weapon) and a broadsword (for a secondary). Riding, of course, a royal purebred black steed.

Course they had pistols :P They tested armor back then before giving it to the knight who was going to use it by shooting the armor with a pistol at pointblank range proving a bullet could not penetrate it. Eitherwise they'd have to restart the whole armor again. It was on the history channel a few months back.

They most certainly did. Depends on how far back pre-colonial we are talking, however. And the region, at that.

Ideally, I'd be reared with the Xiaolin in China. I'd need no armor, nor many weapons... I'd pretty much fight in boxers with a stick.

Wow, finally someone who's not a western knight...

Anyway - no - pistols did not exist pre-colonial...
At least not in the time you guys wish to be..., you may have misunderstood the history channel episode...

Anyway - I was gonna say how bas ass yours was Kaf, but didn't want anyone to feel left out...

Actually quite surprised that no one picked samurai, or something eastern...

Missunderstood it? WTF. They even said pistol. I am so going to find that clip on the net now just to prove they said pistol.

I'll try my hand at this but i'm not sure of all the weapon names or when they may have been available although I watch the history channel religiously most of the time.

I would probably be a rich plantation or farm owner that has done very well for himsefl and earned the title of noble through my wealth and knowledge and skills as a warrior.

I would most likely ride a stunning white mustang drapped with a purple robe and fitted with the nicest sewn saddle anyone would see.

I would use a light saber or short sword as my side arm for its lightweight and speed so that I could swing it easily while on horseback or pull it out quickly in case my main weapon was dropped or knocked away.

My main weapon would most likely be a long sword with a good deal of length and weight so that it would cause devastating blows no matter where I hit someone.

My armor would be leather mail as it is light and easy to move in and won't slow me down as much as heavy armor would or weight my horse down as much and slow his stride down as much.

My helmut would probably be a iron or steel helmet, just rather normal with perhaps some symbol on it as would be on the purple drape adorning my horse.

Ok I think that is it. As for my trainign I would have had extensive sword fighting, horse riding, and barehanded training incase I somehow became weaponless. I suppose that my attack setup is meant for more speed instead of pure power and full and unmatched defense capabilities.

I'd actually wanna be a well traveled Xiaolin warrior, travel to Thailand, and mix my style up with some boneshattering muay thai.

The earliest pistols would have been matchlock first of all - and would really not have been pistols - just arquebus with shortened barrels.
These would have been more today like the length of a sub machine gun or a shotgun with a shortened barrel - pretty much a carbine...

True pistols - with flintlock firing mechanisms first appeared in the 17th century...( well into the beggining of the colonial age...)

I mean, I'm open to debate this - I could very well be wrong. But you'd have to tell me a specific type of pistol and a specific time...
In truth - the best you could get was well at the end of the renaissance - well away from the period in discussion...
( when even gothic armor and the bow were pretty much gone )...

Now, an Arquebus - like said earlier - would easily be obtained and was well available, but would not work too well on horseback...
even a later musket would be hard, and those were very late and hard to come by...
