View Full Version : Apparently I know how to use a whip....

So I've been in high gear, training constantly with my good gypsy friend..., we together have a fight we're practicing to be performed in the coming show and gig which is only a couple weeks from now...

I'm sitting around resting, and he's practicing with his whip...
for the last few weeks a bunch of people with varying amount of expirience have been fooling around with it - and he's been constyantly trying to get good as he inherited the whip from an old member...

So he's trying stuff out and doing ok, and I ask if I can try it out...
I've never really done or used whip..., I've used similar stuff like chain, rope and hook, and such - but never whip...

So I twirl it around like he did and cracked it...

He stares at me and tells me to do it again...
so I did...

We're like brothers, so he knows I've never used one before - so he thought it weird, and asked me to do it again - but to crack it in a particular area, in an overhead form...
so I did...

Apparently I could do most stuff which usually takes a lot of time to learn..., after literally just picking up the whip...

Anyway - I'm not trying to show off - but I thought it was really cool, so I'm being encouraged to get one...
I'll try to see how well I can do if I actually put some time into it and I'll share what I know here as always...

Haha damn Luth, that's awesome. Whips are not easy to maneuver right off the bat. Very nice. :D

I watched a show once where a guy put out candles with a whi without hitting and breaking the candles. He was an expert, lets see if you can get that good :D

Well, I'm getting one in a few days...,
I ordered one which seems of pretty good quality...
But it's pretty hard deciding...

Most of the people I know who are experts or just good reccomended Kangaroo hide - outside and with a strip on the inside of rolled hide...
This was the universal suggestion - except those cost around $300 each...( most telling me to go with something like 6 feet since I've never used one )...

I'm not ready to spend that much money on one yet -
and everyone differed in opinions of what a cheaper one should be made from...
I got every possible suggestion short of human hide...,
and I'm sure they only didn't mention it because it wouldn't be strong enough...

In the end I got a nice cow hide one - not bovine male since I was told it would be too hard and need to be oiled too much...

I got it 12 feet - my friend's was 10, and I frankly don't think I'd care to buy a practice one at 6'...
If it's a lot harder - then I'll just deal with it...

Frankly, I didn't know there was so much to this weapon -
and where I first thought a lot of the particulars to this weapon were just show - I've found a lot of body movement, subtle concepts, and plain taijutsu in the use of whip...

For now I'm repairing a friend's whip ( since I know a bit about leather ), and getting the opportunity to practice with something new....again...
