Koei Reveals Original Wii Game, Opoona (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158009)

For people wanting something other than Dynasty Warriors.
By Patrick Klepek (http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=4767412), 03/13/2007

What the Wii needs more of are daring, bold, innovative and new games. We're starting to see more of these as time goes on, and Koei's joined the fray with Opoona, and there are some heavy hitters landing their talents to this quirky adventure.

First, the setup. Opoona is not only the game's title, but the name of the main character, as well. Opoona, a descendant of the brave Cosmo Guards, is visiting the planet Landroll with his family, when he's separated from them and find his parents in the hospital for series injuries and both his brother and sister completely missing. What happened? In Opoona, it's your job to earn a license to travel to other colonies and find out. These licenses are different jobs -- rescuer, idol, detective -- and players pick and choose what they'd like to become.

Despite the somewhat serious sounding subject matter, Opoona's art style suggest the game is anything but. Shintaro Majima heads art direction on this project, while Sachiko Yukimura, who has worked with Yuji Hori several times on the Dragon Quest series, joins as planning director. Most exciting for RPG fanboys, however, is Hitoshi Sakimoto, the composer of Final Fantasy XII (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2006397)'s excellent soundtrack, penning the music.

In a bit of a twist, Opoona is controlled without touching the Wiimote whatsoever. We only have a brief description of combat from Koei, but they claim movement and "Active Bombom Battle," which encompasses the game's combat scenarios, is controlled entirely by the nunchuck, allowing for one-handed play. Snapping the nunchuck fires projectiles at enemies, whose trajectory can be changed by moving the nunchuck.

No release date set for this one yet -- Koei will only say TBA -- but stay tuned.

Koei Unveils New Wii RPG (http://wii.ign.com/articles/772/772659p1.html)

From the makers of Dragon Quest VII
by Anoop Gantayat (http://wii.ign.com/email.html)

March 14, 2007 - Koei met with members of the Japanese press in Tokyo today to unveil a new, original RPG for the Wii. Titled Opoona (http://wii.ign.com/objects/853/853591.html), this game is being developed by Japanese development house Arte Piazza (previous work on Dragon Quest VII and the PS2 remake of Dragon Quest V) for Japanese release this summer.

The game's title is taken from the main character's name. Opoona is the son of a Cosmo Guard, a warrior that protects the peace in the universe. One day, he's out with his family on a space trip, and gets involved in an accident. His parents are killed, and he finds himself separated from his brother and sister.

Your goal in the game is to help Opoona find his siblings. Opoona starts his adventure on the planet of Landroll, which is being terrorized by demos known as the Dark Rogues. The people of Landroll reside in sealed residential areas, and those who dare step outside face threat of attack.

Part of the game has players experiencing daily life in one of these residential areas. You'll have to take on jobs in order to live properly. The game includes over twenty jobs, ranging from professional detective work to a part time job at a fast food restaurant. Performing jobs increases Opoona's stats, improves his relationship with townfolk, and also opens up new areas of the game world.

This isn't just another simulation game, though. The game includes a storyline that's split into chapters. As one would expect of an RPG, you'll have to explore the dangerous fields surrounding the residential areas and face off against enemies in battle.

The game's "Active Bon Bon Battle System" makes use of a few of the system's motion sensing capabilities. Opoona has a ball on his head called the Energy Bon Bon. You attack your enemies by tossing this ball. To toss the ball, you hold back on the nunchuck's analogue stick, then swing the nunchuck in the direction you want to toss. Koei noted that the entire battle system can be controlled with the nunchuck, so players can lay down as they play.

As you advance in the game, you'll eventually rescue your sister Paullina and your brother Copoona. These two can then be used in battle. Paullina has two balls on her head instead of one. Copoona has his Energy Bon Bon below him (he doesn't have feet, unlike his brother and sister), which apparently gives him better magic capabilities.

At today's unveiling event, Koei introduced some of the staff members of team Opoona. From Arte Pizza, Shintarou Mashima is producing the project, with direction by Yukiko Sugimura. The aural side of the project is being overseen by Hitoshi Sakimoto, who previously worked on Final Fantasy XII and Vagrant Story.

Dragon Quest producer Yuji Hori was at the event as well. While not having a role in the game's development, he's the one who got Arte Piazza and Koei talking following last year's E3. At that time, Arte Piazza had already started development on the game, but was without a publisher.

Since they went with Koei, we hope to be able to share details on a US release for this title in the near future.

It sounds like the story will be interesting. I think I will need to get a Wii soon fgor Zelda TP and this and whatever else is out that I want. It is only $250 so that is easily affordable.

Update - According to various sources Yuji Hori of Square Enix has strong contacts with Koei and introduced Opoona's developer, Arte Piazza, with the company to sort out a publishing deal. Considering Hori-san is also working directly on a Wii game as well right now, it seems he really is positive about the console, which should certainly bode well for future Dragon Quest games appearing on Wii.

In addition, Game Watch has released a video in two formats. Check them out below:

Original Story - In a shocking move, an non-ported title is in the works for Wii courtesy of Koei. A daring and innovative title, Opoona, takes players into cosmic grounds with a poor critter separated from his family and seeks help in a unique adventure.

According to 1up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3158009), Opoona takes players to the appropriately named planet Landroll with his family. However, danger takes its toll and Opoona finds his parents injured in hospital and his siblings missing. Players earn a license to explore various colonies to find out exactly what happens through different jobs – rescuer, idol, detective and so on. Strangely enough, Koei note that the game’s control comes from a one handed nun-chuck styled control, with projectiles and movement both utilized by moving the nunchuck.

Sachiko Yukimura, who has worked alongside Yuji Hori on various Dragon Quest titles, leads as planning director, along with Final Fantasy XII’s composer Hitoshi Sakimoto working on the game’s soundtrack.

No release date or other details have been announced yet. Be sure to check out 1up for some screens and other tidbits.

Well, the Wii hasn't even been out for a year yet. If they start pumping out high-end (or as high-end as the Wii can get) graphical games from the get-go, there'll be nothing new for loyal Wii-goers later down the road.

The Wii supposedly has graphical capabilities slightly more than double that of the Gamecube. Some of the Gamecube games were goregeous, so it's only a matter of time before some real graphical gems come out for the system. Maybe not anytime soon, but there will be for certain.

That being said, the other two next-gen systems will more than likely always have better graphics than the Wii. Thankfully, I could care less about graphics, myself. I play games for gameplay and funfactor, and many of the Wii games deliver in those areas. (plus Sonic, Mario, Harvest Moon and the Fire Emblem series will all be making numerous appearances on the Wii, which is more than enough reason to own one, in my case)

First in-game screens of Koei's Wii-exclusive RPG (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=160255)

Monday 19-Mar-2007 3:15 PM Cel-shaded Opoona screens reveal RPG-style battle system

These are the first ever in-game screens of Opoona, Koei's "unique" Wii-exclusive title unveiled last week (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=160179).

With Koei disclosing very little info in its initial announcement, there has been much speculation as to what type of game Opoona will be, but these shots reveal what looks like a typical cel-shaded RPG affair.

It's got all the components - exploration, talking and what look like your ordinary turn-based, stat-heavy battle scenes.

Opoona, the dude with the orange orb hovering above his head, appears to travel with two friends, who assist him during battles.

So, nothing out of the ordinary then. But Koei promises some unique puzzle-based action that "utilize the unique mechanics of the Wii Remote", so we'll be keeping an eye on this one.

Yeah the game looks a bit weird to me. I prefer story/fun to graphics but I want games to look a bit mature and not stupid...unless the game is stupid and its meant to look that way.

This game looks "interesting"

I'd at least rent it :)

It looks a bit strange to me but maybe a rent would not actually be a bad idea. I wouldn't buy it tho.

Opoona: two news vidéos (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?url=http://www.jeux-france.com/news20463.html&lp=fr_en&tt=url)

Koei (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=fr_en&trurl=http%3a%2f%2fwww.jeux-france.com%2fchercher48_editeu rs.html) diffuses two news vidéos illustrating the system of combat of its next RPG on Wii entitled Opoona. This new title with the coloured design will put in scene a young nice hero named Opoona which will leave to research his/her brother and his sister on the Landroll planet after being separated from its family at the time of an emergency evacuation. Nunchuk will be used for launching projectiles on the enemies while directing their trajectories. The exit of the play is awaited for the next summer in Japan without more precision.

Wii RPG Opoona Slated for March 25 (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3166008)

Nunchuk-only "lifestyle RPG" coming from KOEI.
By Andrew Hayward (http://www.1up.com/do/my1Up?publicUserId=5738964), 02/07/2008

KOEI announced today that Opoona (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3158011), the exclusive "lifestyle role-playing game" for Wii, will ship in North America on March 25th. This confirms the date spotted on Nintendo's release listing (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3165485) last month.

As detailed in our import hands-on preview (http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3164273), Opoona uses only the Nunchuk to control the game, which follows a boy and his younger brother after escaping from their parents' spaceship after an attack. Along with a lighthearted visual style, Opoona includes what we deemed to be an "amazing soundtrack" by Hitoshi Sakimoto, famous for his work on Final Fantasy XII (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2006397).

"With Opoona, developer ArtePiazza had a masterful approach to creating an Action RPG for Wii that includes intuitive and interactive controls using just the Nunchuk," said Amos Ip, senior VP at KOEI. "Opoona will give videogamers a refreshing and new perspective on the role-playing genre. The 'single-hand control' combined with the modern fantasy world of Opoona is sure to captivate both veteran gamers and newcomers alike."

The whole control thing... even for the Wii, is odd, haha. This is a game I'd like to be able to try before I buy.
