Materia Theoria
Here's my theory on how Materia would work, considering that Final Fantasy VII was a real life situation.
Firstly, however, to understand Materia, you must understand the Lifestream. Like the crystals of Final Fantasy Lore that we're all so familiar with, the Lifestream is what keeps the world alive. Without the Lifestream, the world would stagnate and die. Basically, the Lifestream is like the Crystals, only in liquid form.
How Materia is formed is a miracle in it's own, yet the elements they take the form of is due to the properties of the Lifestream itself. If the Lifestream manifests all elements of the world to keep it alive, then it's possible for the elements to separate and form their own orbs of Materia, like your individual Fires and Ices. In rarer cases, the elements will blend together to form multi-elemental materia, like Kjata. Since the way of the world also balances on Healing and Ailments, such things in the Lifestream can separate and create their own orbs of materia. The Summons are probably manifestations of powerful souls that went into the Lifestream and ended up becoming their own respective orbs of magic.
The use of Materia depends on the Materia itself "borrowing" a part of the user's lifestream to actively manifest it's powers. The Lifestream borrowed is finite, hence the "Magic Points," and can be restored. In essence...the magic in the universe of Final Fantasy VII is the power of the Lifestream itself...but you already knew that!!
