What was the Best Book or Books that you read in 2006?

The first five Harry Potter books, never thought I'd ever read them, turns out I loved them.

Not exactly a new book, nor did I read them for the first time this year, but I got the leather bound collection of the Hitchiker's Guide series, which is still one of the greatest group of books I've ever read.

I've also recently bought Nothing's Sacred by Lewis Black which is a pretty entertaining read so far.

Here's some self promotion, try reading my Books, well, you don't have too, but I thought I'd self promote.

I'll put it on my list of to-read stuff, though I have quite a pile of books waiting for me that I've yet to get around to. I'll keep an eye out for them next time I'm in Borders or something though.

The best book I read this year was 2061:Odyssey Three. Arthur C. Clark is a damn good science fiction writer.

They are kind of hard to find in stores, Blood Moon you can order though most bookstores, however Black Moon has to be ordered online. I can, the next time I get money, order a copy for you and if you trust Lathan, I can have him mail it to you.

I just recently got into Neil Gaiman's novels.

I'd read through the entire Sandman graphic novel series, as well as several of the offshoots of that such as Books of Magic, Thessaly Witch for Hire, and the Sandman book with art by the guy who did most of the FF series (his name escapes me at the moment).

American Gods:

HOLY SHIT I LOVE THIS BOOK!
Its got believable characters, a gripping storyline, and an ending that I never saw coming. Plus its funny how some of his other characters get into the story as well. I've only had it a couple months and I've already read it almost five times.

For other Gaiman fans, Delirium is in there. They run into her and Barnabas (the talking dog) on the way to meet the goddess Easter. If you have the book take another look and see if you can figure out where. ^_^

Neverwhere:

I'd seen the BBC live action miniseries and it was alright, as usual the book is better.

Door is a funny and interesting character, though my favorites had to be Croup and Vandermar. Its hilarious how they take such a casual approach to their job as assassins.

"Why Mr. Croup, if you cut us, do we not bleed?"

Croup looked at his hand for a moment and then replied, matter of factly, "No. We don't."

The Marquis De Carabas was good too, an interesting character for sure.

Good Omens:

For this one Neil teamed up with the author of the Discworld series (once again I forget his name) and writes a story about a Demon and an Angel who are trying to prevent the Apocalypse because they've been living on Earth for ages and have grown quite fond of it. They hatch a plan to postpone it by making sure the Antichrist doesn't grow up to be just that, the Antichrist. One problem, after eleven years of watching the little runt they make a most disturbing discovery, THEY'VE GOT THE WRONG KID! So now they're scrambling to find the real one as Atlantis rises from the depths, the four horsemen get saddled up, and angels and demons sharpen their swords for the final battle.

So far its pretty funny, but I prefer American gods to it.

The best book I've read this year would be The Picture Of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, I believe.

The Half-Blood Prince was great, too. I love Harry Potter. As was Eldest by Christopher Paolini. But I can't remember if those were last year or this year. I'm thinking they both only came out this year, but I have no idea.
