View Full Version : The Past and Future

" Where does the difference between the past and the future come from? The laws of science do not distinguish between the past and future in ordinary life. You may see a cup of tea fall off of a table and break into pieces on the floor. But you will never see the cup gather itself back together and jump back onto the table." Quotes by Stephen Hawking quoted in the book 'Hannibal' by Thomas Harris.
What goes up, must come down? Is that metaphor true? Is there anyway that you could go back in time to try and stop the past? Maybe so. Maybe not. But how could you explain to a doctor or scientist that the laws of nature can be broken?

Really, humans know so little about time. Its one thing to take existing knowledge and create theories based on it, but actually seeing if the knowledge and theories work is another.
As for how to go back in time, I don't really know. Perhaps maniuplation of gravity, or things like black holes may hold the possibility to, but i don't see how actually physically going back in time would be possible.

this thread is going to make me go crazy..
i dont like to think about it.. i mean... if you go to the past, will it change the furure?..and if so, will you know who you are..or why you changed the past..being right now is changed and so is the future
see...i dont like thinkin about it

Yeah, you never know what a insignificant change in the past could cause. IT could change nothing, or it could change everything...
This reminds me of a quote in my book
"The future is dark, but the past is darker"

1: I seriously doubt that humanity will ever invent time travel.
2: If someone did, I would do everything in my power to stop the technology from doing anything.

Exactly, Time Travel would be a huge mistake. It would would screw everything up. And besides if time travel were possible this world would be in alot worse shape than it already is.
And if it ever happens, I'll join idgaf to stop them.

I myself wouldnt mind the ability to travel through time, but i wouldnt change anything either. No saving kennedy, or stopping hitler, or preventing AIDS, none of that. No turning the tide of major wars. I'd simply go back and see for myself what happened.

What if something was already altered and we just don't know it? I mean there's no way to know for sure that something has not already been changed..maybe the major events that have happened already were caused by someone altering them...? I'm with Mog..I don't want to think about it..O_o

But just going back is changing things, your prescence alone could set off a chain of events that could alter many things in "our" time.

Lekky's got a point...but i still wouldnt mind doing it. Maybe the "time travel" would make me like, invisible to the denizens of the period. If that were the case, then it would most likely be ok...
Time is a topic of immense intrest to me...

What about time travel to other worlds or dimensions, that way nothing gets screwed up here in this world. Unless you think it will bleed over in this world.

on the topic of "time travel"... the only safe way to do it would be open a window into the past so you can watch what happened, but not actually be there.

i think alot of the answers to this question lay in astral projection...i cant remember what its called but there is something that can happen to you in ap that might take you back to see in time or take you to see something that is goning to happen..all kinds of stuff to do in ap...but getting to where you can do ap is the hard part lol

Going back in time is logically impossible, not because of the boundaries of time, but just because if there was some kind of time machine to go back in time in, going too far back would cause its invention to not happen, and then what would happen? And I agree with Idgaf, just doing anything could alter anything possible. In sports games, people often say "It was a draw, but if they had scored that goal then they would have won". How do we know? Scoring that one point could lead to a pyschological boost in the opponents and they can come back to win. Scoring that point could lead to a tempered fight and a team may be disqualified. Ultimately I thnk time travel is not really what we think it is, because going back in time alone can alter so many things that past and future could be completely different to how we remember it, or how history books tell us, let alone actually DOING something out of your time era. Now If you'll excuse me, a certain 13 year old has gone far into intelligent conversation and must rest his brain.

but see, if it could ever be done, ever 2000 years from now, they'd be doing it, and you know how humans are, they'd talk to someone...and someone would know that it happend...by now everyone would be going back in time, if it could be done...in any time.. but i for one havnt seen anyone from time..
O_o or have i?... damnit, i tried not thinking about it!

Lol, maybe I'M from the future.....bwahahahahahaha
And, it really is impossible to postulate about the effects of traveling back in time. Although its easy to say "just changing anything could lead to catastrophic consequences", but no one knows that for sure.

I beleive in destiny, sort of. I think all of our lives are set before we actually live, but there's no way to actuallyt KNOW what we're supposed to do. None of that RPG "break free of your destiny" crap. Every single thing you do is your "destiny". Even if you supposedly "find out" what your destiny is, that too is destiny.

I think Time is somethign better questioned and theorized about, rather than truly tampered with. I'd love to go back in time and change a few things around, but I have no idea what I would bring about by doing so.
I beleive both in the Chaos Theory and the Ripple Effect. Moth farts, and somehow the bombs that were dropped in Japan during WWII were duds. America would be made into a huge joke and we'd probably end up split into a bunch of third-world countries. If one were to go into the past and tamper with things, it could cause said moth to pass said gas, preventing the detonation of sead weaponry, and would ultimately alter time as we know it. Such a small anomaly in time you may create, eve it if's something so small as preventing one of your ancestors from tripping and falling as a toddler, can expand into something you may never have dreamed of.
