View Full Version : God is Vain?

I took this thread from another forum, but I thought it would make for good conversation...
For the sake of this argument we will assume that the Christian god described in the Bible is real. For the record, Im an atheist.
Ive read quite a bit of the Old Book and I've noticed a constant in God's personality. He seems very vain. Consider the story of Abraham, ordered to sacrifice his own son as a test of his beliefs. Doesn't that smack of vanity? Or how about the first and most important commandment. It states that there is no god but God. It forbids the worship of idol gods. Again and again, there is a thread of vanity in God's personality. And what will God do if you dare offend him? Destroy your city of course. Or turn you into a stone pillar. Or any of a number of sick cruelties. But when you ask yourself, "why did God create us?" can the answer be anything other than for Gods own pleasure. Honestly, He creates a universe where the number one rule is "Worship me and no one else." Am I the only one who sees it?

Even if that is so, what does it matter? He is still the one who created us, and it isnt like most of the things He asks arent things that we should do anyways, such as dont kill, honor your parents and neighbors, dont steal, etc. I guess he could be considered vain, like w/ the no idol worshipping, but i mean, if i created existence, i sure as heck wouldnt want my creation worshipping and thanking some other fictional god for it all.
As for some of the things in the Bible....perhaps the people who've written and translated it decided to add a few things for emphasis, or to just put their own spin on it. The Bible was written and translated by humans, so its prone to error.

God, is I read in the Bible, just wanted to be loved, he wanted everyone to know that he made us..
It would be like you.. Making a video game. And no one knowing that it was you who made it, see?
As for the test of Abraham, God stopped him before he did kill his son, the point is that he would follow God no matter what.. And for the sacrifice that he almost made.. He was named father of nations. And in the heaven I believe Im going to, he is as an angel if not king
but yeah, if thats what you want to call.. wanting everyone to know that yuou made everything pritty, then yeah...Vain

God is a jealous god. He only wishes that no god be put before him. Enough said by me.

I don't know about vain, but he did get pissed. I mean he flooded the world, destroyed cities and just dared anybody to sin against him.

yes, he also said that he will destroy the world again, not with water, but with fire

Then again, why bother doing it himself when we have plenty of nuclear weapons to destroy the world with?
Besides, so what if God is vain? He created existence itself; humans, the earth, the universe, time itself. Even if He is "vain", its not our place to judge him on it...

Who knows... maybe that's what the christian/jewish/muslim prophets were talking about.

Yeah, but that would still be HUMANS causing it. Granted, God could "command" the first person to press the button and fire the first missile, but even so, I doubt it.

I agree. Doesn't the story go that Lucifer was an angel that grew so strong that he rivalled the power of God, so God judged him and sent him to Hell, or something along the lines of that. Seems like he wants to be the only one to be praised and worshipped.

no, he only thought he was strong, there was a war, and God won...
if you win a war, would you not do somthing to whoever you were fighting?.. thats not vain.
white: "yes, he also said that he will destroy the world again, not with water, but with fire"
thats and the end of times...thats when its all over, and there isnt a world anymore
and if you really want to get into it, he already disd the fire thing with solem and gomora (sp?)
there are alot of things that we dont know, whos to say that God didnt use to really talk to people, and walk with them,. but we have gone to far so he doesnt talk to us any more, maybe he is busy with another world he made?...
point is, how can we call it Vain!? its like your father, wanting you to set and talk to him... you do somthing wrong, your grownded or someing... think of him for who he is if your going to start talking about him, if you want to get into this then think of him as a father... its not vain

Yeah, Lucifer was an angel, and he thought to himself "Hey, why does God get to be God?" So he went to war w/ God, and got his ass whooped big-time.

i think vanity comes from man and since man believes in god they portray him with human faults. personally i do believe in a divine force. but i don't believe its judgemental, vain,or close minded. that's just us.

I dont know how i missed somthing here, but ima bump this and say it now.
lucifer is NOT in hell, he got judged and God sent him here to the earth, where he still is, and only after everythin g is done will he be sent to hell, but until the end of times he will be on earth...
no believes of any relgion says that he is in hell.. even of those who dont think God is the highest power.
just thought i'd add that in

If the bible is correct, then no, he is all powerful, that's just realistic, he wants all to love and worship him, that's kinda selfish but OK, but vain, nowhere does it say he looks at himself in a mirror or anything like that.
btw, I'm athiest, so I don't really care what his personality traits are.

Im at a point in my life where i do not connect to modern religion at all.....it is all unlogical to me...................and dont say 'its all a matter of faith" it has done to nothing to make me faithful. This does not go to say i dont belive in a higher power........the fact is i dont know..............none of us really do in my opinion....we think we do, but we dont, whats above us

God would not command that type of tihng, because it goes agianst his nature. that is the only limitation that God has, he cannot go agianst his nature. This means that that situation would not hpapen, because for god to make osmeone nuke osmetihng, it takes away form free will. without free will, there is no real purpose for anytihng.
God is not vain, and the term jealous is not wuite right. He is the only universal, timeless bieng, and because of this ois the only one worth bieng worshipped. He justwants to be recognized as such.
