View Full Version : The future of Evermore forums...

Although we are still young, i've started to think about getting a domain and hosting for Evermore. We're too small as it is for such things to be a worthy investment, however, fi you all keep posting and inviting new members, we could possibly be big enough to get our own site!!!

I've been looking into these things, and am contemplating getting them in the future. If we could be big enough and active enough to get a domain and hosting by the end of the year, it'd make a wonderful 1 year aniiversery gift for Evermore, lol. Plus, we'd really be able to do well once we have our own domain name and stuff.

BUT, in order for me to pay for these things, we need to keep Evermore active by continuing to recruit more members, and post and makes lots of threads!!!

^_^

Lancet Jades
01-24-2004, 11:47 PM
Well, thats the kind of stuff i have to think about =/=/=/

if we do get a domain and hosting, it'll be a long way off, so there will be plenty of time to think about what Evermore is to become.

Is GW A TOGRC Board? I Forget.... I Haven't Been There In A While.

Lancet Jades
01-25-2004, 02:26 AM
No, GW has its own domain and other stuff.

TOGRC boards have www.togrc.com/forums ..etc and stuff before them.

If we got a domain, we'd be www.evermoreforums.com

Why not a .tk link?

Go to www.dot.tk

gws a vb set up board with its own server and domain, you cant really attach cheats to Evermores main site unless it can compete with gws section otherwise it'll be pretty pointless.

Well, yeah. If any of this DOEs happen, its a long way off, as we have to be at a pretty decent size before it would be worth the money. But that leaves us with plenty of time to figure out stuff like that ^_^

a move to a real vB woudl be well worth it if this place had more members... and .tk boards, you get popups everytime you go to it, so...i dont see much use in popups...ive stopped going to many sites because of them

cecini
03-11-2004, 09:47 PM
with doing a tk site.. it is hard to sign in because the cookies don't save. Which bites.

Lancet Jades
03-11-2004, 11:29 PM
Yeah, the cookies thing is the problem. But...actually, moonlight coded a special link that fools it into thinking you dont have cookies.

http://www.togrc.com/forums/index.php?ID=(insert board id)&nocookies=1

That can be used w/ any TOGRC board

Sabin
03-21-2004, 12:47 PM
What about asking Al from GW if you could use their codes and stuff...also how big do we have to be in order to become a domain?

Zelphiel
03-21-2004, 01:10 PM
first you'd have to buy one... and buy a VBulletin license...

it really doesn't matter how large the forum is.

Sabin
03-21-2004, 01:41 PM
Well, so then Lades is paying for this site that it is now...:( ?

yes he is paying for it...ill tell u how much on IM being im talking to you lol

Quel Thalas

The vB license is rather expensive, for an owned board, but becomes worth it after a while... i'll talk to johnny later, see if he wants help with such things, cause im making a real vB this summer, and he wants me o merge my current one in with his, but, yeah, i can help with getting servers, and teh such

Quel Thalas
03-21-2004, 01:56 PM
it might get you teary eyed, but running a real vB is alot of work... alot more than a TOGRC...cause you have to deal with servers, and the such... and then there is the chance that the boards dont get alot of hits...its alot to think about...

Sabin
03-21-2004, 02:13 PM
hmm...I'm interested in learning all of this, if you're willing to teach me (probrably not) I'd be willing to sit and learn all of this, of course when we both have the time though:D

04-02-2004, 03:01 PM
I don't think its a great idea as of now, but in more time it could be good. Its a little small at the moment, but in the future it could be great.

Zelphiel
04-02-2004, 03:31 PM
yeah, after it gets larger it's definately something we may do.

Lancet Jades

Yeah, i know, and for now, and for a while, i'll have a lot of time to be on here. Besides, running a real vB board w/ servers and stuff allows me a lot more freedom in whatever i do. All in all, it would allow me to make the site much better than i could on TOGRC.

Exactly, but not just tehm. There's lots of stuff i could add and do if i werent on TOGRC.

Lancet Jades

According to Moonlight, it'll be at LEAST July until we can get the database extracted from TOGRC. What does this mean, you ask? This means we have a choice: Either we wait until Jult (at the earliest) to move to our domain, or we move now, and start over completly. Everyone would have ro re-register, we'd have to rebuild everything, we'd start over at 0 threads, 0 posts, etc. Personally, i don't want to have to start over, however i'd still like to hear your input on this.

Laggy
06-01-2004, 12:47 AM
we need to hurry up and wait then..lol

im not starting over again, i love EF and everyone here..but i wouldnt do it, sorry but...i moved here from GW, this is like my homw, and im not going to be liveing a forum life if everything i've done here is gone...

so we hurry up, and wait...

Hm, back then you have to pay $5 per month right? What about now as well as when it exceeds the amount of view?
I wouldn't mind starting over again. If possible, maybe it's a good idea to give us a few days to get prepared; if we are moving, in a few days. This way we could save whatever thread we wanted that are still active. as well as some of the attachments or whatever.

Leknaat
06-01-2004, 12:49 AM
I think we should wait. I'm not in any hurry^_^. Honestly I have accounts at GW and GH and I like this place best. I like the people here too. I don't want to have to start over.

Either way would work, if we move now, we just start over, a year from now we'll be back where we are or better, if we wait, we won't lose anything, basically i don't care, I just hope we won't lose any members.

no i just dont want to start over not all of the members would join again and we would lose all of our threads and we would have to wait forever to get back to the way we are it just wouldnt be the same ef so id leave but if laggy leavesi do ef wouldnt be the same without him

You have my support OP. I'm trying to get people I know to join. I've also mentioned EF in a writing group that I'm in. I figure with the Creative Writing forum, it'll be a good way for some up and coming authors to get some feedback. Esp. from the younger influence here.

If it means keeping all of our threads, styles, pretty much evermore's legacy, then yes. I think we should wait so we can keep everything.

damn man you dont just make a forum then decide to piss it off when you upgrade lol I mean people are gonna have certain attachments to the old.

Lancet Jades
06-17-2004, 01:16 AM
Ok, new idea. Doc and i were talking about this a few minutes ago, and he proposed this idea:

Instead of actually moving the entirety of Evermore Forums to the domain www.evermoreforums.com , I could instead keep EF on TOGRC, at least for the time being, and merely make the domain name and have it be a redirect to the TOGRC site. This would allow us to remain on TOGRC until a date when we are truly in need of moving (eg, when we fully outgrow it). The downside is we wont have the freedom we would off of TOGRC, but it would remain cheaper for me, and it is a much more secure server.

As with decisions before, I'd like to hear everyonr's opinion on this before reaching any decision.

cecini
06-17-2004, 02:00 AM
I really think you should go ahead and put it all on the new website.. that way you aren't paying for all that space to be wasted. Plus, EF would grow really well with its own board and not relying on TOGRC as much. And you can put all those cool hacks on that TOGRC doesn't have..

Plus, EF would grow really well with its own board and not relying on TOGRC as much. And you can put all those cool hacks on that TOGRC doesn't have..Yeah, thats what i was thinking, but TOGRC provides better security settings and such. However, on our own vb board, i could make backups of the database, so even we got hacked to high hell and back, a click of a button could restore it from the last save point, all videogame-like, lol. But i still wanna hear the opinions of all the members.

Laggy
06-17-2004, 02:48 AM
well, we arent doing to bad here, i would really like to see it be moved, but that way sounds good being we could get here by www.evermoreforums.com ...though wouldnt you be paying for the togrc AND the domain...i say lose one or the other and save money, as is this site ish great..so im just going to stand behind you lades, what ever you feel is the best, your the one paying for everything.

Quel Thalas
06-17-2004, 04:25 AM
Im with whatever you do lades...ive ben around long enough, so i know i'll re-up when it comes in...

EDIT: Upon further reading, i do believe a wait until the extraction is possible would be the right thing to do...the loss of Laggy, and Cacaw, would insumountably lessen the amount of posts this forum gets each day. So, upon that. Wait until you can extract, get the server, the domain, and the liscense, and then dump the current database onto the base data for the new site, and download all the styles beforehand, and then reload them...a process taking, i do believe, no more then 5 hours, on dialup...and on cable...no more then one hour.

I would like to see all the cool hacks and such, anything that would make the best even better, but as for the money issue, I understand that too well. As for security, you just said you could back it up so that's not a major issue, worst case is we would lose a few posts, nothing we can't redo. As said by others, I stand behind you and your decision 100%.

Another point with the money, if those of us that can would donate some, that would probably help out or even fix that part of the issue.

Saberstar
06-17-2004, 01:20 PM
Doesn't having your own forum makes others harder to hack you? Well anyway, it doesn't matter to me all that much. Things wouldn't change that much. But if we do move, things would get less stricter, somewhat.

NOTE:

Immediately after the move to the domain, EF will seem kinda messed up. A lot of images probly wont work, and other things may be wrong. It'll take a day or two to bring EF back up to par in terms of basic things, and about a week or so to get hacks back, such as the arcade and shoutbox. Bear with us during the short time after we move.:)
