View Full Version : Why your computer sucks

I'm unfortunatly a cable guy. Being a cable guy I install highspeed internet on about 20 computers a week. On these 20 computer 9/10 of them the person has not bothered to uninstall the useless crap the manufacture has so graciasly installed. These programs are so fricken useless, all they do is bog the computer down. Hell, I've worked on computers that are 5-8years old that still have software installed that the customer has never used and when you ask them what its used for the answer is always "I dunno, it came with the computer." These are not the answers I like to hear because this makes my job harder. Why you ask? Because sometimes these programs are trying to access the internet or they slow down the computer so I can't get it going. If its slowing me down, imagine what its doing when they're trying to use it. They don't know what their own computer can do, and they never will. Three simple things they could do that would take like what.. an hour to do?

1. If you don't use it, uninstall it. Not only does it stop this useless program from running in the background, it frees up space on the computer.

2. Run a spyware/adware scan. Believe it or not, that brandspanking new computer you just bought comes packed with it, or they had dialup or dsl before and its packed from all the pron they look at.

3. Msconfig can be your friend if you're careful. Get rid of crap booting up on your computer. Go through with a fine tooth cone and find out if your computer can run with out it, and by that I mean run with out any problems.

If you do this you can save yourself time and hours of troubleshooting. And you can save me time. Or else your computer will just suck... a lot... like hooker on a friday night suck...

Right, on all three counts. The programs manufacturers put on prebuilt computers makes me think that they just picked random software out of a hat. Most of the time you do not even know what the software is for, but you leave it on the computer because "it came preinstalled". That is really bad logic because if you do not use it, do not know what it is, and is NOT software that the computer needs, then why have it. All it does is take up space, memory, and will probably cause you to get adware/spyware downloaded onto your PC. I know all of this from personal experience, which is why I am always careful about what I download, what I install, why I always scan my computer for viruses, adware, & spyware(as well as defrag), AND why once in a while I go through all of my personal Documents and Settings folder manually, folder by folder, file by file, to delete anything that I know should not be there. You would be surprised at some of the things that can make their way into your PC without your knowledge and by how much space I have cleared up before by doing that. Yes, it can be a lengthy process, depending on what you have in there, but it is worth the time to me, if it means freeing up space and keeping my PC clean & organized.

Heh I cleaned up my computer years ago. Pretty close to the time that I got the computer. As opposed to just manually going through all my stuff, I just use Tuneup Utilities on a regular basis. I can get rid of tons of unnecessarily used stuff that way.

I don't really know many computer idiots. But whenever I do see someone who doesn't uninstall their pre-installed software, I tell 'em to get rid of it, since they have "a slow computer". Same story for everyone. Hehe.

It sucks cause

1. it doens't have a good GC
2. Doesn't have a dvd drive
3. Doesn't have that much space. 30gb isn't a lot since my ipod holds that much.

Damn, you need to update that.

Does reformatting the whole damn thing count?

Ha, I stripped mine bare the first time I turned the thing on. All the space they used when I got the damn thing is now occupied by thousands of dollars worth of pirated software, haha.

If you mean reformatting your entire hard disk drive and starting from scratch, then yes, that counts(as long as you keep it cleaned up after you install your OS and various programs you use).

Mine's occupied by pirated pirates! o.O
Seriously, I have 160 episodes of One Piece (A pirate anime) filling up half my hard drive.

I keep it cleaned for the most part, but there is this one spyware thing that annoyes the shit out of me that I can never get rid of even when I hunt down the file itself and purge it. Its this thing where it opens something else even after you close it, and keeps repeating like that. Systemtec or something like that.

If you have an FAQ to tell you where in the registry you need to go and how to fix your problem, then do it(just be sure to follow the FAQ step-by-step). As long as you remember to EXPORT your registry before you edit or delete ANYTHING in it, then even if you manage to fuck something up, you have your backup file to IMPORT back into the registry(any good registry FAQ will tell you to backup your registry and how to back it up before editing it in any way). I have had to edit my registry before, so I do have some experience with it. Actually, I had to edit it four different times in May. Twice for my webcam(05/10/2006 and 05/15/2006), once for Yahoo! Messenger with Voice(05/12/2006), and most recently for folder settings(05/29/2006).

Mine doesn't. :) Buit is myself, so it's all good.

I don't like buying computers simply because of all that crap they put on there, and they don't give you the option to format the drive the way you want it...

well.. you could just buy a copy of xp and format it yourself and then start from scratch.. thats pretty easy granted if you can find the drivers for all your stuff.

reminds of this guys comp who set on fire while he went to go get a pizza and he put this thing on ebay for people to buy him a new one... I don't think he got anything though but it was worth the effort.

Free paper is always worth the effort, so long as it involves no sexual favors.

Never owned a store-bought computer, so I can't gripe along, but to further destroy the topic, I got a .avi to dvd converter, for pirated shows to become home-made movies... I love my home-made movies.

swap meets are your best friend, i picked up my 2.66ghz p4 from one then 'liberated' an extra 256mb stick via the 5 finger discount since the reatards decided to not hire security and place it all out the front of their stall.

Anyone with any actual 'knowledge' could pry open the case and get the mobo's model number and stuffs. It's fairly easy, though I wouldn't want to spend $200 bucks on a new version of XP or even $100 for an 'upgrade' or OEM version. I'd be better off just building my own if I were to buy Windows...

swap meets are your best friend,

I've never seen one here, sadly. :(

If you spend that much money then you're not looking in the right places. I've found a full install fir xp pro for $86 plus shipping.

Yeah and it was probably OEM... I've never seen a place offer the full version of Windows XP for less than $150. The upgrades at Walmart for Home Edition are $99.95...>..>
