Stabbed Boy's Mother Must Clear Future Boyfriends With Court
Police: Sons Stabbed By Boyfriend High On Crystal Meth
POSTED: 7:05 am MDT June 12, 2004
BOULDER, Colo. -- A woman was ordered to get court approval for any future relationships after her boyfriend was accused of brutally slashing and stabbing her two young sons.
The order, issued Thursday, was a condition for Arleen Cordova of Longmont to regain custody of Derrick Pippin, 7, and Christopher Pippin, 5.
James "Jimmy" Leach, 31, Cordova's former boyfriend, is accused of attacking the boys in their sleep while he was baby-sitting on Dec. 21. Christopher was slashed across the throat and stabbed 20 times in the chest. Derrick was stabbed twice in the chest but managed to run for help.
Police said Leach was high on crystal methamphetamine at the time. Cordova was at work.
Leach is charged with two counts of attempted murder and eight other charges. He was scheduled to enter a plea Friday but the hearing was postponed until July 9.
Boulder Magistrate T.J. Cole told Cordova that any future boyfriends must get a criminal background check and be approved by the court. Cole said the court must "do all it can, at all costs, to protect the children."
Derrick and Christopher have been living with grandparents in Pueblo since recovering from their wounds. Their father, Donley Pippin, said they were doing well and were eager to move back in with their mother.
They were expected to rejoin her in Longmont as early as next week.
