I try not to say a whole manufacturer sucks... they all make good computers it's really just about how upgradable and durable they are.

as for hp's they just dont last

Alienware is way too overpriced..and HP is good. I have a 95 system and its still running without problems.
well with manufacturers like Dell, Compaq/HP, Gateway, etc... their systems are built from custom parts from that company. You can't use a Dell case and change the motherboard. Same goes for the other manufacturers as well. Those manufactured PCs are good b/c they are idiot-proof. A monkey could upgrade those. But when it comes down to it, building a custom PC is probably best. You get all the parts you want, plus you can change them without having to worry about compatibility, it's a lot cheaper than having a prebuilt system, and it looks cooler. Only prob is that you dont get a warranty and it's a pain to keep track of each part. Oh and who can forget about the damn wiring involved >.< *shakes fist* i hate having to wire a motherboard, i dont do it enough so i tend to burn a lot of boards :)

well if it was down to building a desktop i could do it in about like 2-4 hours, tops, but i'm looking for a laptop and i know shit about building laptops
HP makes good laptops but they have a power-jack problem. You might wanna look into that. Dell makes pretty good laptops as well. It all depends on what type of work you'll do to the laptop. Check out this place http://www.pctorque.com/ I've been thinking about getting a laptop from them. My friend suggests them and he's a computer psycho. His room is literally lined with computer cases :)

Hey...look at my HP...lasted since 95 till now.

My HP is about 6 or 7 years old. But since I added a better video card, it's not all that bad. All I hate is how they put security devices on their machines, to try and influence people to only buy HP hardware.

Yes, storebought computers suck, I've never owned one.
As for laptops I think IBM might make some good ones.

...4 years...thats great, 3 questions i got for you, 1: what do you do on it? 2: think that thing could handle something like AOM-AOT, or stay online (downloading/uploading, gaming, etc.) for like a day? 3: could you just leave it on (sleep mode), without it overheating?
thats the problem with both my current pc, and the problem i'm afraid of with my new top...my parents pc has been rebooted like maybe 30 times in the whole 5 or 6 years we've owned it, and that was to finalize instalations. The point i'm trying to get at here, is that i need a top that has at least 40+ gig HD, 650+ ram, a decent processor...just something that i'll be able to use to burn cds, play games, & be online on like 30 different sites (multi-tasking)

Technically, all computers are store-bought, since all the parts you get for your computer are bought in some kind of store. And I know what you're thinking....."these nuts". But I just want to clarify something, when it comes to your nuts, you might wanna think about getting them off your chin before you talk. Hahaha, just kidding. I'm feeling hateful.

nothing. notice how it says to 05. :P

I never had an overheating problem with it and the only heavy gaming I did was FFXI, and for about two years of it's life it had an always on internet connection.

Gayway computers are crap(I know from personal experience). Dell, or Hell, desktops are not that great, but I hear that their laptops are pretty decent. As far as the rest, I could not care less. I prefer to build my own computers.

Spammify me Asshole! I mean Cap'n!
not to mention that youre wrong, because you don't buy the computer you buy the parts, so it isn't store bought, the parts are.
Do laptops overheat while Idle?
Why do you want a laptop anyway? It isn't neccesary to burn cd's on the go, and laptop gaming sucks.

to tell ya the truth, i've had bout 2 desktops already...they BOTH suck balls, although even though the first was much better (older version & home made) the second was (is) the biggest piece of crap i've ever used...only reason i bought it was back when i bought it i knew shit bout pc's, my step-dad 'pointed' it out since it was cheap and said "free double memory!", oh...and it's black...I LOVE ANYTHING DARK (if my mom werent' an uber religious freak i'd go goth, paint my room black, and get like 30 pierceings...in places i probly shouldnt mention >.<)
Do laptops overheat while Idle?
~ instead of overheating they just freeze...see thats the major difference between pc's and laptops...laptops freeze, pc's burn
Why do you want a laptop anyway? It isn't neccesary to burn cd's on the go, and laptop gaming sucks.
~ i want a laptop cuz i wanna carry it around my house and not be stuck in my room in front of my computer saying "HURRY UP YOU PIECE OF CRAP!!! NARUTO IS STARING!!! *kicks shity pc* ... *smoke* ... CRAP THE PIECE OF SHIT'S BURNING!! *screams & runs around the room like a moron* *BOOM!!*" >.<
~ yes, burning cds while i'm watching tv is a neccesary, cuz i dont like sitting in front of the piece of crap waiting for error msg's (which i get like every other min)
~ how so? plug in a mouse, and your good to go + if you get a big/thin top you get all the pleasures of big screen gaming + the portibility of a top ^-^

But performance is less for more money. A 500$ notebook is = to a much cheaper desktop. Just put one in your TV room. Thats where mine is.

Lol lathan...what you do to kill it.
nothing. it still works just fine. I just happened to find the pc that I'm using now being sold for about half of what it normally would cost so I impulsively decided to upgrade... which worked out well because the HP was pretty out of date and would have costed me more than what I wanted to pay to get it a little more up to date.

All the parts are store-bought, therefore, as a whole, it is storebought.
