from tomshardware: lighted western digital hard drive (http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/10/14/western_digital_goes_flashy_wi th_lighted_hard_drive/)
Western Digital has had the right touch when it comes to creating products that address demands that are outside the focus of, let's say, traditional storage companies. One example is the Raptor hard drive family, which was the first to run 10,000 RPM on a SATA interface. With no enterprise business (SCSI drives) to defend, the firm could easily afford to release the 36 GB version in 2003, and simply watch how the market would react. Feedback obviously was good enough to release a 74 GB model (which was somewhat faster) at the end of the same year.

ok... I can't agree with that. A lighted hard drive while it looks neat i don't need my hard drive to look like a riced out honda civic. I'll leave it to you guys if you want it.

What the hell is it with people and all this flashy crap?! All it does is cost me more money, cause me more hassle, and add another gizmo to my system that could fuck shit up! That is the LAST thing I need!

it looks ok... put I'll nearly always sacrifice looks for performance and storage space.

a 200gb hd is probly cheaper than what they want for those things anyway.

...i wonder what possessed them to do 74gb instead of 70 or 80.

as for its flashyness, themed cases are the go as they look snazzyits so your not surrounded by the same crappy beige all the time. It also makes late night using look spectacular and the use of a light while recommended isnt required.

Yeah, I hate that natural beige they make computers these days... But I keep my comp under my desk, so I have a pretty nice case, but nothing overboard... mine is black, but my monitor is that shit beige.

I don't want the inside of my computer to look like a rave party. Nobody needs to look in my case, so I don't need it. That light looks like it could give me cancer. I'll stay away, thank you very much.

I'll stick with quality hardware over flashy.

I'll stick with quality hardware over flashy.

Western Digital are the 2nd most well known company when it coems to HDDs, the first being Seagate.

therefore they are both quality and flashy. Its just like how thermaltake are good at cooling solutions but the majority of them have cathodes and leds to make them 'look better'.

I know that Western Digital is great. I have a WD HD myself. What I meant by quality over flashy is that I want more HD space, rather than cancer-inducing light fixtures.

But you can't put unlimited hd in a computer thats why I find it a better idea to buy one of those...or a few of them.

I beg to differ. Two 200GB hard drives are a lot better than two lit-up 74GB hard drives. More room for files, and memory allocation.

only 2?

Seagates (http://www.seagate.com/products/enterprise/nl35.html) NL Series RAID ready SATA have already hit 500gb allocations.

whack 4 of those babies in the Thermaltake Armour Series (http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Chassis/fulltower/armor/va8003swa.asp) for a 2 tb limit and you then have yourself a basis for a system of sheer 1337 flashy uberness of DOOM!!!

add in flexiglows (http://www.flexiglow.com.au/products/Catalogue.htm) range of flashy cathodes, sleeves and cables.

500watt titanium coated psu of flashy doom and illuminate the whole damn room.

It was just an example.

Performance is first, looks are second. So after I buy the best hardware I can get, then I move on to buying cool stuff. But then again, I might not even do that, to save money, so when the next line of hardware comes out, I might have enough money to buy it.

Looks are on par with Performance, you can have a great pc fit it in a shoebox and itd be a piece of crap because its impracticle and horrendus to look at.

whereas you could deck out your pc with the same gear spend some extra cash and get it looking 1337.

I have a comp in my room. It's 1.5 GB (yes, One point five, as in 1 1/2 or one and a half) and it works just fine. I don't need more memory OR lights....
