View Full Version : I face a dilemma about my future career.
I took my FDNY Medical Exam today and did very well. Only problem is that I failed the vision. I wear glasses and had to take the exam without them on. Each eye is 20/70. FDNY requires 20/50 each eye and 20/40 for both. FDNY recommends I get Lasik. I already spoke to my Optometrist and he said there's nothing he can do. It's either give up being a Firefighter or get the Lasik done. What sucks is that I need to have this done before I can know that I'll be in the next class. I still need to take a Psych Interview but I can't do that until the Medical Block is removed.
If I knew 100% I was going in to academy, I'd have no problem doing it. But right now I'm not even sure. So far everything seems up to par. Lasik isn't bad it's just that I'm only 23 so I'm still rather young to deal with it. Right now I'm like 60% sure I want it done. Please let me know what you guys think.

I actually think that you need to need to be 25, as I looked into it myself. Glasses are a pain, and I can't wait til I'm old enough to get it so that I can get the surgery and be able to see ALL around fully... not just in the area my glasses cover. But I think its probably a good idea either way, but I would wait a while due to your body still growing, still not being sure about your future, and rapidly advancing technology.

If it's what you really want I say go for it. But you shouldn't take any surgery lightly. I would do as much research on it as possible before you make a decision to be certain that you want this.

was gonna say what Zel said. Decide what you really want, if you really really wanna be a firee fighter, maybe get this done if you feel comfortable

I say go for it. Lasik may be the best thing you ever could do for your eye sight. You never know until you try.
It's not like a i have a choice though. I want to be a firefighter =/ Anyone that knows me IRL knows that I've been pursuing it for the passed 5 years. I took the written back in 2001 and I made the list in 2004. For them to get back to me now and say I have to get this done to continue doesn't leave me many options. *Sigh* I just worry about any complications and whether or not I'm a candidate. I'm not about 80% sure I'm going to get Lasik done. Now it's whether or not I'm a candidate for it. I'll probably find out next Friday when I see my Optometrist.

There are complications for every surgery. It happens very rarely though.
