racism in games?

have you ever been playing a game and wondered why the main hero or heroine is either always white or in rarer cases asian? of course this isn't always true there are exceptions...but in general i think video games need to have more role models for other etnicalities. still here's a list of underdog heros or those that break the rules of most other games.

barret: no he's not the main hero in ff7 but he's loyal,dependable and has a kick ass cybernetic gun attachment in place of his lost hand. barret is also a family man that looks out for his daughter.

riddek: the main hero in pitch black and chronicles of riddek. i list him because there will be a riddick game released for the x-box. despite a shady past riddek shows he has a soft spot for genuinely good people and will fight the system when it is unjust. he can also kill blood thirsty lethal monsters just by gutting them with simple blades.

christina: christina from tekken 4 is one hot latino and she is by far one of the best characters in the game taking eddy's style and improving it slightly.

juli: its hard not to love juli from tekken 4. she is a beautiful native american woman that cares deeply for the enviorment and has a strong sense of spirituality and purpose.


eddy: eddy from tekken 3 and 4 kicks ass. he has lotsa personality,a mysterious past,and as many ladies will tell you he is one hot brotha!

jax: jax from mortal combat can throw down with some nasty close ranged combos. he is a soldier,hero,and always helps his friends out of tough scrapes.

blade: yeah the games based on blade sucked. which is a real shame since blade is such a cool character especially when potrayed by wesley snipes.

main character in matrix game: she is independant,sharp,tough, and resilent. it's a shame i don't know matrix characters better otherwise i'd give her name.
i'm talking about the female pilot that used to have the hots for morpheus of course!

torc from the suffering: it can be debated whether or not torc is a hero. afterall he "may" have killed his family and he is an inmate in a prision. however torc is one badass character that can use his "rage" to morph into a nasty and mean monster that tares shiz up!

besides for these characters i've had a hard time finding protagonists in video games of other races besides caucasian and to a lesser extent asian.

i dont think its meant to be racist, i then that when japan is making a game, for people in the USA to play, they just think of white people..in other games when there asian, is only because that games for japan lol..thats how i see it anyways

still laggy, it would help to have heros that see things from different perspectives and come from different backgrounds. and the japanese aren't completly naive when it comes to the u.s. they know there are other ethnicalities here besides white people. lol. i guess the cold hard facts are white ppl and asian ppl make up the majority of the gaming market so the japanese are going to try to appeal to the core audience rather than the minorities. however, i don't agree with it.

yeah i'm not saying its just the caucasians that are the bad guys. its weird because i know black guys that can't stand seeing a white guy with a fine black girl yet they are always mackin on the white chicks. lol. also other ethnicalities in some cases get away with more. for example theres black tv stations...yet how quickly do you think there would be a riot if there was an all white station? as far as the career world all someone has to do to get what they want is scream "he was choosen over me because he's white!" and bam, instant lawsuit. still racism from any etnicality is wrong and we need to adress it to correct the problem on all sides.

well lath no matter how good a forum is there will always be some glitches. still as it stands evermore is one of my favorite forums and the slight problems here and there do not hinder my overall enjoyment. as for racist people mahar my gf brought up a good point to me. she pretty much said it is even wrong to hate them because it still contributes to a circle of hatred. i guess you gotta kinda feel sorry for them in their ignorance. still i admit racists of any ethnicality piss me off.

Maybe I was bored, just like the damned liberals. :) Anyways, I've seen topics like this on other forums before, including mine. My opinion has never changed. If ethnicities want role models, maybe they should look in the movies or in literature. The last time I remember, the only "race" on this planet was the human race. Cultures and a color of skin do not count in my opinion.

The characters in all Japanese games are Asian. In cases like Barret, he's an African-Asian. They only look white to us becase the graphics aren't able to portray races as wel. Look at FFX and on. The characters look Asian, they really do.

IMO there isnt anythign wrong with having a black guy for a chracter i have black friends that RP great and all that. a black Zelda gaem would be great.... even if it is awkward it doesnt matter it would be a very fun game to playt.... look at FF7 Barret he is black and FF7 is a GREAT game thanks to Barret because he is funny. and with all his swearing it makes you laugh Barret is funny and he makes FF7 a good game... so please Tina do not be Racist here MANY people dislike it

I seriously doubt that a pre-existing franchise like Zelda will change much as far as the races of characters go. It would be a completely different thing if they introuduced a new character that was black or native american. I really think that they should do more things like that because it would broaden the game's audience a little more, and it would help put different cultural perspectives on the game.

There is no rule saying that a black, hispanic, or native american man (or woman for that matter) can't save the world in an adventure game or an RPG. It's just small minded people that think that the only place for minorities in video games is dealing drugs, playing sports, murdering someone or something else of that nature.

Personally, i wouldnt mind if they did have more racial diversity, but i doubt that if any company DID do that, that the "Racial diversity" would just be a bunch of stereotypes and it would end up all gimmicky, and then, when it didnt work out too well, they'd use it as an excuse to not do it more.

From what i can understand kenny, she isnt opposed to having blacks as main characters completly, its just that she doesnt want them to take some storyline that already exists, such as Zelda or mario, and just plop a black guy or girl down as main character. But if the made an entirely new storyline, and made the main character black, then there wouldn't be a problem.

There's a difference between saying "i dont like the idea of something" and "you're a bitch". She's allowed to not like something if she wants to, just as long as she doesn't go around preaching that she's right, and people who like the idea are wrong.
