School Comes Under Fire for Shot Glass Prom Favors
Jun 3, 2004 11:03 am US/Eastern
Sewickley (AP) Police in the Pittsburgh suburb of Ohio Township staged a mock car crash two weeks ago to raise student awareness about the dangers of underage drinking.
Somewhere along the line, that message got lost as students of Avonworth Senior High School in the township are raising eyebrows with their choice of prom favors -- shot glasses for the boys and champagne flutes for the girls.
The school's principal says students didn't ask her permission to order the engraved glass party favors -- and once she learned what they were it was too late to stop them from being distributed at last week's prom.
Some parents, and the police, are questioning the wisdom of such prom favors.
Parent Gloria Newman questions why school officials and police spent a week on alcohol-awareness training leading up to the prom, if alcohol-related favors were allowed.
