what elements would a fighting game have to have for it to be the ultimate fighting game?

Good characters, a diffrent storyline but still interesting storyline, alternative choices on style moves not just the same old same old, lots of unlockables, not too easy, not to hard, unless you want it to. not repetitive, and alternitive things to do other than fight.

add more characters and a story mode to street fighter 3 3rd strike. balance the characters some more too, i mean perfect balance. no more tiers (play on words)

I don't know why you'd want more than just fighting in a fighting game. There are other modes in a lot of fighters... but they usually end up revolving around fighting as well. Except for stuff like Tekken bowling and the MK2 space invaders secret.

anyway... you should try Guilty Gear X2 or higher. that series has some of the most uniquie characters in the fighting game universe.

I don't think a game will ever reach that level of perfection. There will always be tiers... even if the characters aren't very divided they will still be there... even if it's only a little.

3S and GGXX comes pretty close to that though. At least half the characters in both of those games are very playable against the top tier characters in it.

Speaking of balance... Slash is already out in Japan, and it should be here soon, so, woot.

But the ultimate fighting game?

-Near perfect balance
-tons of characters. Over 50, if that ever becomes possible.
-Original moveset for each character. In other words, no two characters would be too similar(Examples being Mario and Doctor Mario, Ryu and Ken)
-Difficult computers
-Kickass soundtrack(Not as important, but it always helps)
-Good story(ditto)

It wouldn't really matter if it was fast paced or slow paced, it'd kick some ass either way.

And for me, it would probably have to be 2D. I really don't do 3D. You all know that.

Definately 2d... I just said more modes of play because sometimes regular fighting becomes boring. what i was thinking of was having one longass 2d level where you advance and fight as you move through the level. Sorta like Castlevania, but with kickass moves.

Mortal Kombat or Soul Caliber

:hmm

this isn't which game you think the ultimate one is... but what qualities should it have to be the ultimate fighting game.
