Microsoft taking $126 hit per Xbox 360

BusinessWeek commissions study, which says the software giant is paying a premium on next-gen hardware.

When Microsoft got into the console game in 2001, much was made of the fact that it lost an estimated $125 per console on each Xbox. Four years later, that per-console-hit has tallied to $4 billion of red ink for the Redmond, Washington-based software colossus, whose current-fiscal-year forecast calls for $44.5 billion in revenue.

However, Microsoft seemed all too happy to fork out billions to become the number-two console maker in the world. The approximate 22 million Xboxes it has sold surpasses Nintendo's to-date sales of over 16 million GameCubes--but still lags far behind the 90-million-plus Sony PlayStation 2s in homes worldwide.

Now, it appears that history is repeating itself. According to a study commissioned by BusinessWeek, Microsoft is again losing around $125 per hard-drive-equipped unit of its brand-spanking-new console, the Xbox 360. To perform the study, tech researcher iSuppli took apart an Xbox 360 and examined the cost of all its components. It concluded that the hardware of each unit cost $470 disassembled. That means Microsoft loses $71 before each HDD-equipped 360 console goes to the factory, right around the $76-per-unit loss analysts predicted for the core Xbox 360, which has no hard drive, back in June. (Those same analysts also predicted shortages of the console, which then was believed to come in only one model.)

However, when iSuppli said the HDD-equipped 360 console cost $470, that's exactly when they meant--just the console itself. They didn't include the cost of the wireless controller, headset, Ethernet cable, universal media remote, combination high-definition component/standard A/V cable, and bricklike power supply that come in the box of the $399 Xbox 360 "Premium Pack." Factor those in, and Microsoft's per-unit-loss on each Premium pack comes to $126--just above the per-unit loss of the original Xbox--before one penny (or, more likely, yuan) is spent on labor.

Yea...I'm glad that the playstations are/going to do better. I'm a ps person all the way, and as long as sony keeps making lots of money and better consoles i'll stick with them and keep buying...

...the PS3 is going to cost AT LEAST $500($600 from what I am hearing now). Plus, Sony is adding more expensive technology to the PS3(hence, why it is more expensive). Therefore, they will probably lose more money per PS3(or at least around the same amount that Microsoft is losing). Besides, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft ALL lose money on console sales. If they charged enough to make a profit or just break even, their systems would be too expensive for most people. So, no, Sony will not do better. Also, maybe Sony has sold more PS2s than Nintendo has GameCubes & Microsoft has Xboxs, but the PS2 also came out waaay before the GameCube & Xbox. You also have to take into account this lawsuit against Sony for making cheap PS2s and how much that could cost them. There are too many factors to make an accurate prediction right now as to a final outcome, or who will win this battle in the Console Wars(and no, I am not a fanboy of ANY of these companies).

Loss of money when making consules is hardly news. All of the big 3 will be. They make the money on games.

AT LEAST $500($600 from what I am hearing now).
It might end up being $500, but it won't be $600.

they havent released much as far as titles go. Sony released specs which dwarf xboxs dramatically, and then released statements saying its a multimedia entertainment system and not a gaming console.

xbox has stated its specs, that halo 3 will release around the ps3s entrance time and that they have the 'superior console'

nintendo have stated theyre not wishing to compete for sales and going for a 'you can buy our system along with a 360 or ps3' as a more 'buddy system'

so right and wrong are only based on what you want from a system, if you want a pc clone, 360 is your best bet, if you want a multimedia clone ps3 is your bet (as itd be far superior to current tech) and if you want a system that is different then the revolution is your bet.

plus in the end it'll probably end up with about 3x the titles that either of them have. nintendo has their flagship games and microsoft has about 5 major franchises. sony still has the vast majority of the 3rd party developers working for them which is why they won last time despite having the console with the worst specs. having all that plus peddling the console with the best specs can't lose.

everything I've ever seen on it says $465-500.

sony and nintendo have really always been about making games than focusing on being the uber console, as both have really added trinkets and other methods of interaction to their consoles while microsoft have had a few name titles and an internet connection but remained focused on exploiting that as much as possible before they go 'oh crap back up plan uhhh...use it as a brick!'

Itd be interesting to see the figures at the halfway point to see if microsoft actually back up their system with decent games and not the same 2 title pray and hope.
