View Full Version : The inevitable upgrade to vB 3.5.0...

Sometime soon (as in, within the next month or so), I will be upgrading EF to vB 3.5.0. However, this poses many problems. Since EF is so hacked (especially the database, which is the main problem), this will be a tad harder than just upgrading to a higher 3.0 version. This will involve some database work (actually, a lot, most likely). The upgrade will also involve a lot of file uploading and such, and since I have dial-up, I'll need someone else to help me with this stuff.

As it is though, I'd like to have a few people on hand during the upgrade that can help out. Knowledge of upgrading to vB 3.5.0 from a hacked board is a bonus, as is high speed internet. I'll arrange a date and time for the upgrade, so we can plan on all being online at the right time.

Aside from uploading files, I'll also need a few peole up dl a backup of the database beforehand, because if things get fucked up...well....the backups will be our only hope.

As it is, I have plans for various shortcuts and safeguards from danger in upgrading (meaning, I'll arrange it so that if something blows up w/ the database, I can revert EF to its current state in vB 3.0.5 almost immediately instead of leaving it in limbo until whatever was wrong can be fixed).

Hacks are the main problem this is causing, and as of right now, I am unsure what hacks (if any) will not be reset. I'm hoping the shoutbox and arcade won't need to be, as they're such major hacks, I'd expect the coders to have an upgrade from 3.0 to 3.5 for them without loss of data, but in the worst case scenario, YES, we WILL lose all data for all hacks (shoutbox, arcade, various CP settings, and so on).

So, anyone with knowledge of the upgrade, or who has high speed internet and can devote a few (or several) hours one day to being on hand when I upgrade, it would be greatly appreciated. If you're willing to help, PM me, and in a week or two, we'll start planning when to do it.

I have no clue about forum stuff, but I have high speed internet. If there's anything I can do, tell me. And good luck on upgrading.

Was I the only one that followed instructions?!

j/k, but although I dont have much computer knowledge, I can figure things out just about as fast as it takes Raist to start a debate. If I can get my mom off her computer (since I'm behind a router and her being online really slows me down) then I can go up to 200 kb/s.

Plus, you know how I've been wanting to help out around the site.

No, PM me now, so I can start getting a sense of the manpower I have avaliable to help. Though I don't really need that many people, I'd still like to have a bunch of people online if I should need them.

I've been basically coming home, checking this site, downloading/watching anime for an hour on thursdays, and just lying down contemplating life for the rest of the evening, so I have no shortage of spare time.

I know. I was there. Now we are shoutboxless. And other things...Which I'm not sure of.

Well yeah, he has to redo every last little hack or edit he had on the entire site. EF will be like that for a period of time too, though I'm hoping to have some of the more basic and common functions back up to 100% by a couple days after the upgrade. But EF will probly take a couple weeks to be back up to full capacity and such =/

And what do we get out of this?

I'm around if I'm needed, but I won't actually volunteer. Just remember my quirky away message problem. =/

Oh sweet sex! I can't wait for the upgrade. But alas, I know nothing about them there technical shit.. I'm here for moral support. :)

From what I understand, a lot of the significance of the upgrade is more for the staff-end of the website, including easier ways to do a lot of hacks (they're plugins instead of full fledged hacks), and easier functions for moderation and such. So it isnt like it'll be a whole different look >.>

Dunno how its like on the administration end, but I dont have a problem with functions as a mod yet... or are hacks harder to install than I think? If not, then I would suggest simply waiting until a more major update to save trouble.

pretty much the same for me

The problem with hacking a vB board is that when you upgrade to a higher version, no matter WHAT version its to, you have to redo EVERY SINGLE hack on the entire site. 3.5.0 seeks to make that a lot easier by offering alternative methods of hacking that will survive an upgrade, reducing my total workload in the future by a LOT.

And, this is about as big an upgrade as they come, Yvl. Thats why it's going to be so complicated. The sooner I get this done, the better.

The only thing we'd lose, at most, is data from the hacks, and thats only if the 3.5.0 version of them can't use the existing data, which I have a hard time believing. So, chances are, we'll retain SOME hack data.

This is also one reason I prefer LotGD to the vB RPG. Since its completly independant of vB, anything to do w/ vB upgrades won't affect it.
