What I mean is like where they got the names and all that. I've been looking into this for quite some time, here's what I have so far:
Gilgamesh (FFV, FFVIII) - The title of the first epic written in about 2500 BC
Grendel (FFVIII) - Villain from "Beowulf", c. 1000 AD
Ifrit - Muslim equivalent of Satan
Shiva - Hindu god of death
Sylph - Greek mythology
Ragnarok: the Norse Apocalypse
Locke (FFVI): A rennisance philosopher
Vorpal: Jabberwocky, 1800s
Bandersnatch (FFIX): Jabberwocky, 1800s
Jabberwock (FFIX): Jabberwocky, 1800s
Odin - Norse God
Freya (FFIX) - Norse God
Quetzacotl (FFVIII) - Aztec God (I think)
Anyone know any others?

Yea, I know that Ifrit means "walking volcano" in Japanese. Other than that, no I don't. Nice list though, I had also read that Quezacotl is in Aztec mythology, so you're correct.

Fenrir: Norse Mythology
Phoenix: Assyrian Mythology
Dragoon: A mounted European military unit. (17-19th century)
Tiamat: Babylonian Mythology
Lich: Old English/Germanic Mythology
Kraken: Norwegian Mythology
Paladin: The word comes from the Latin word palatinus ("attached to the palace")
Titan: Found most commonly in Greek, Roman, Hindu, and Norse Mythology.
Golem: Jewish Mythology
Seraphim (for the ff6 esper or for Sephiroth): Jewish Mythology (the highest ranking angels)
Kefka: Derived from the name of the author Franz Kafka.
I'll do more later

O_O Are you sure about that? I mean I noticed the similarity in their names, but I didn't think they were directly related...
When it Rains in a Lagoon is called a Squall. (FFVIII Char names)

pretty sure. one of kefka's theme songs in ff6 is called 'the metamorphisis' and something Kafka wrote is also called 'the metamorphisis'.
anyway... that's the only relation I could ever find between Kefka and something else...

Locke (FFVI): A rennisance philosopher
I think Locke's name was originally just "Lock" in the Japanese version... With no real conotations other than the obvious.

eh... maybe. the only one I remember having the drastic name change was Sabin. I believe his Japanese name was Mash.

Lol one thing connects to another in my mind... could you see Sabin as a surgeon?
And Hotaru is sorta right about Locke. "Ke" when at the end on a word in Japanese is their way of ending the word with a k sound.

i thought a squall was just a storm that was intense and started suddenly

They've been changed frrom the original mythology, but thats to be expected in any game really. The origins of the names and stuff they use is just that: where they GOT it from.
If I use Gilgamesh in my RPG, its doubtful I'd cast him as a young king who's 2/3 god from Mesopotamia....
