Are you really good at a fighting game? Ok then. How bad were you when you first started.

Damn, Guilty Gear X 2 was one of the games I was terrible at. I used to suck against my friend who never played. Of course, It was my first time too. But still. Anyway. I kept tryin moves like Down, Forard, X+?. I didnt know how to do burst, roman cancle, or any of that stuff. If fact, I sucked at doing specials too. Anyway, I sucked.

I know you all sucked at a fighting game once, so share how badly you sucked.

Zelphiel

back before I learned the basic principals behind fighting games... (this was Street Fighter II era, btw), I really sucked. I just button mashed, but once I learned basic fighting game theory it was uphill from there. The only other things that I've had trouble learning at first was triangular dash jumping in the middle of an air combo in MvC2 and getting the timing right on a few guard cancels and counters in SC2.

I call it button mush. ^^

Lancet Jades
01-21-2004, 08:27 PM
I majorly sucked at fighting games, and i still do to an extent. I'm very tempted to button mash, and its a hard habit to get out of >_>

Zelphiel
01-21-2004, 08:40 PM
when you've made a habit of it, it can be. the best thing to do is put it on practice mode and set the comp to do nothing... then take it very slow from there, learning how to do things....

button mush... haha. I'll have to remember that.

Day

My cousin came up with it. God she is funny. She was telling my other cousin " to win, all you have to do is just button mush". Somthing like that. Funny how she never wins.

Zelphiel
01-21-2004, 09:39 PM
well... with Eddie Gordo, and Maxi type characters you can do "some" stuff... but it's not worth it. it's just better to get the hard part over with and actually learn em.

Nereid
01-22-2004, 12:27 AM
Meh, I always suck at fighting games when I first play them, then I settle in to one or two characters that I can pwn with...either Ryu-type characters, or the ones nobody can use correctly, like Ivy in SC2.

Zelphiel
01-22-2004, 12:53 AM
same here. Ryu type characters are my bread and butter... but I guess it's like that with every 2D player. and I usually pick the more neglected characters like Ivy, Voldo, Faust, and Shuma Gorath. I love buffering into summon suffering with Ivy and buffering from her ancient wheels attack into Calamity Symphony, which is something most people don't do.

Nereid
01-22-2004, 12:55 AM
I always screw up on Summon Suffering and Calamity Symphony, since the only person I get to play against is Megatokyo, and he knows to get in my face and hit the attack button as fast as possible when I'm Ivy. Quite literally, if he lets me get one good attack in, it's all over.

Zelphiel
01-22-2004, 01:10 AM
that's why it's best to buffer into them. SC2 has the best buffering system ever. I try to take advantage of it. one of the craziest ways to buffer into summon suffering, it looks really cool, is to do the (up A+B cancel), then the (while rising B+K cancel) then buffer into summon suffering. it confuses the hell out of people.

on the arcade the first time i was actually pretty good beacuse all it was was a joystick and 2 buttons.

on the console however in the first mk i couldnt land a punch because i was focusing too much on trying to do moves instead of doing them.

I always pwned at fighting games lol. I remember having like a tekken playing spree.. Tekken 1 this is, lol. It was like my first fighting game and i kept beating everyone. I'm not bad with most games usually, but im nothing special except for on a few games. Oh, and i call it button bashing but my friend calls it batton bushing :D

Ricdeau
01-27-2004, 07:41 AM
i guess at first i rpbly did, just i can remember pwning everyone at tekken even though i never played it before. im not that good at street fighter actually, but the recent SF's arent too good anyway. The 3d ones are crap.

Zelphiel
01-27-2004, 01:52 PM
Street Fighter EX3 isn't that bad... it doesn't compare to the badass games that Namco have made and Sega's Virtua Fighter, but it's not horrible. I think they should expiriment with cel shading in a street fighter, KOF, or Guilty Gear game. it looked really good in Budokai 2 and since all 3 of those games have anime based characters it would look good.

Ricdeau
02-05-2004, 03:44 PM
i thought guilty gear X2 was cel shaded? O.o i duno, but the graphics look sweet.

Zelphiel
02-06-2004, 12:45 AM
no.... GGXX isn't cel shaded.. it's just exceptional 2D.

Zelphiel
02-25-2004, 01:42 AM
speaking of cel shading, a Capcom vs. Game would be a cool cel shaded fighter. It would give the series an interesting look. A cel shaded SSB would also be cool.

Im guessing Lathan is now Kaiser? And that that is old news?
My bro has played GG Isuka, he says it sucks. We'll just have to wait and see. Unless I play it soon.
But for now my top 5 are:

1.. Guilty Gear XX #RELOAD
2.. Guilty Gear X2
3.. Street Fighter Alpha 3
4.. Street Fighter Anniversery Collection(If you want me to be specific, I like SF3 3rd strike better than Hyper SF2).
5.. Mortal Kombat 2

Im not good at picking favorites, so this may change over time. I just know that Guilty Gear X2 is an easy to love game.

Hopefully that was a typo. MK1's console debut on nintendo was on the SNES. It never saw the light of day on the NES.

Hadazamui
07-23-2005, 05:13 PM
Actually the reason the SNES removed the blood was because the SNES at the time was a system for the family, with games like Super mario world, ghouls and goblins, and simcity. The genesis didnt care, and put in massive amounts of blood

As long as we're talking bosses... three words.

But Ignitz was rediculously overpowered.

I have my most problems with Ultimate Rugal in Capcom Vs Snk 2

Well, the boss version, yeah, but the playable version of him is way powered down. He can do alot of damage, but only if you can keep from getting pummeled by your opponent... Ult. Rugal and Shin Akuma have next to no defense in that game.

funny thing is they still don't let anyone use them in major tourneys. :P

well hes not TOO cheap if you watch yourself. ok so he still is. but a hit during the rainbow thing Seraph something will stop that and its 60% block damage... and when he restores health another well placed hit stops that so he has his downfall. but yeah thanks for reminding me... :sweatdrop

Bison was pretty good but I never got into using him much because alot of his moves were very cheap...Still he is infinetly better then rugal. Geese Howard is also one of those bosses that started off being intimidating and a bit over powered that is until he lost his flare when better more "under handed" bosses came along (such as wolf gang krauser for example and his multi projectile throw attack.) I also knock characters that all copy the same fighting style. Ken and Ryu's shokan art (yeah i know it is mispelled, but hey I tried) was definetly spread out too far to too many other capcom characters. People rave about Akuma and I admit story line wise he is intriguing and awesome, but all he was is evil Ryu with red hair + his "death" symbol attack is a ridiculous over kill.

Zelphiel
08-05-2005, 02:22 AM
Still he is infinetly better then rugal.

The only Bison that I can think of that fits that description is Boss Bison in SFA3... and the only reason is his super psycho crusher does 60% block damage/100% normal damage. Plus he has his own 'ism' in that game... which basically gives him the best benefits of the 3 regular 'isms'.

Ken and Ryu's shokan art

Capcom changed it to Anatsuken. It's Shotokan btw. :P

People rave about Akuma and I admit story line wise he is intriguing and awesome, but all he was is evil Ryu with red hair + his "death" symbol attack is a ridiculous over kill.

Not really. By the time SF3 came along the 3 shoto scrubs fighting styles had been altered enough for there to be a huge difference between them. (I know they were altered for SFA... but SF3 was the first real change in how they played)

He isn't just 'Evil Ryu with red hair'. It's a lot closer to being the complete opposite of that. Gouki existed in the games (and story) long before Ryu was 'evil'.

and... the Shungokusatsu isn't exactly easy to land on players that know how to get away from it. Even when you do the insanely cheap knockdown wall trap with it there are still ways around it. It really isn't overkill either... sure it does more damage than 'most' super combos but his entire bar has to be full to use it. So it isn't like you can do it repedately. You'll maybe get one chance to do it per fight and most players with half a brain won't take that chance every time they play.

Max Headroom

nightsavior
08-05-2005, 05:05 AM
Well I got pretty good at slamming players with the death insignia Akuma move in SFalpha 2 but you're right lath street fighter alpha 3 did try mixing up the characters more where even if they had the same "style" they had several trademark moves unique only to them. (Actually the whole alpha series seemed to be an effort to make charcters more balanced + stand out from each other.) In marvel vs. capcom I could be pretty damn cheap with war machine, venom, and morrigan then again everyone's special attacks in that game were jacked up to ludicrous levels.

Pinkie Pie
08-05-2005, 09:56 AM
Bison was pretty good but I never got into using him much because alot of his moves were very cheap...Still he is infinetly better then rugal.

Hardly... Except for Bison in SFA3, Rugal could easily take him on, especially using the Orochi power he'd been given. Rugal would have a harder time beating Bison from Alpha 3, but I don't doubt that he could win. (He might wind up destroying himself in the process, but still)

lets not forget Hugo with the most powerful non-boss supers ever...

Assuming that they hit... =/

Well I was a cheap bastard with bison in the alpha games. People would actually whine and be like "Dude! use someone else!" He was more balanced then he was in the first sf 2 games, but he's still a power hitter. When it comes down to it we're all good with different characters. I've seen people be cheap as hell even with sakura or chun li and utterly annilate the competition with Iori who is supposed to be one of the more "fairer" characters. Another king of cheap is rapheal in soul calibur 2. At least two of his simpler foil attacks are very good for combo juggling with a very slim chance of instant countering or recovery.

again... if you're playing someone with skill almost none of that works. 90% of Raphael's moves are vertical. He does have horizontals but almost all of them are useless in juggling because their range moving forward and to the sides is almost nothing. anyway... the only people that get juggled with vertical attacks in SC and SC2 are scrubs. plain and simple.

if you want to talk SC2 cheapness talk about Xianghua. :hmm

Being brought up on Tekken since the year of 1996, here are but a few.

Devil Jin!!! (Wings! Tats! Horns! Gauntlet claw thingys!)
Kunimitsu (shades of SH with the creepy carnival mask)
Cervantes (so cool. I hope he's in Soul Caliber 3. Comes out in October!)
Ling Xiaoyu (uber cute school girl with kick-arse moves)
Heihachi (the hair! THE HAIR!!!)

Maybe more later after more Soul Blade and Soul Caliber.

Either Momo or Yurika from Project Justice. Momo is a tiny, rosy cheeked little schoolgirl in a jumpsuit who runs around with a tennis racket.
Yurika is a prissy, prime and proper princess with long, tightly curled hair and a flowing evening gown. She fights with a violin o.O;;

Cervantes (so cool. I hope he's in Soul Caliber 3. Comes out in October!)

so far the list of confirmed characters is...

Mitsurugi, Cassandra, Taki, Voldo, Ivy, Kilik, Nightmare, Astaroth, Zasalamel, Tira, Setsuka, , and Raphael...

but Namco said that it's going to have a cast of 25 characters... and there are only 3 new characters in SC3 so it's pretty safe to assume that the dread pirate will be in it. They've had just enough characters in the series to add up to about 25. I wouldn't be suprised if there was another guest character from another Namco game in this one. Don't count on characters like Link, Spawn, and Necrid this time though. The producer of SC3 said that they weren't doing any kind of crossover with another non Namco company in this one, which is perfectly fine with me. I was sick of all the scrub players ranting about how Link was the best SC character ever. =/ It was a good thing for marketing... but it's obviously served it's purpose. The only console it's going to be released on this time is the PS2.

also... from what I've been reading it looks like Nightmare will be the boss of the game and Siegfried will be the playable version of him. In this game Nightmare is just a living suit of armor with Soul Edge. (in the pics I saw he looks a lot more like he did in SC1 when he had all of his powers).

Oh yeah, I remember Siegfried. German knight who got the Soul Blade and went....red. I haven't played SC2 (I know - I really should, but I know enough about it), and one thing that put me off was Link (never liked the character or the games). Geez, those names bring back memories (Taki - boobiful ninja, Mitsurigi - cool samurai).

In other words - Yea!

Oh yeah, I remember Siegfried. German knight who got the Soul Blade and went....red.

not really... the red armor was his alternate costume.

and it's Soul Edge. Soul Blade was just the name of the console version of the arcade game Soul Edge. why the renamed it is a mystery to me.

Well there were rumors about "Dante" of all characters being in SC 3 for the longest time but maybe namco decided our favorite red trenched demon hunter was too much of an attention whore as it is having already been in Nocturne and one of the viewful joe titles. lol. As for the "bogus..erm bonus" characters I like them in their own titles (such as Link within his famaliar Hyrule mythos.) but I saw no point in adding them into soul calibur 2. If you noticed every ones endings made perfect sense accept the bonus characters and granted Spawn is cool, but I get tired of seeing him every where.

Aside from being a super-uber-shazzy game, SC2 has Nightmare in it. Though he does not beat teh Devil Jin in the uber-hot-demon-man stakes, he comes a pretty damned close second. Also, he's a bloody rhino of a character I used throughout most of Weapon Master :D.

Though most people say SC (or Soul Blade/Edge) was basically a Tekken with characters, I have to disagree. Whereas Tekken is a slam-wham-thank-you-maam, brilliant FMV, summer blockbuster-type of Fighting game, SC seems to be a tad different. It's kinda the sleeper hit - not quite as popular, but unique enough to hold it's own. With big swords.

Also, am I missing something? Apparently, on the Profile of most of the characters, it say someone beat Nightmare before with Soul Calibur 4 years previously. Have I missed a game?

And er.....yeah...Nightmare :D

Though most people say SC (or Soul Blade/Edge) was basically a Tekken with characters

I think you mean tekken with weapons. :P

and no... I never thought that. the gameplay is too different from tekken. In soul edge it was a little more similar... but starting with the first soul calibur it was a totally different system.

Zelphiel

he was only Siegfried in Soul Edge... starting with Calibur he was Nightmare. In SC3 Nightmare (the armor) and Siegfried are two different people. Basically the sword completely took over the armor and had no use for Siegfried anymore.

here's Siegfried...

and the original nightmare...

http://wallpapers.boolsite.net/srv11/Images/Wallpapers/JeuxVideos/SoulCalibur/SC_Nightmare_01.jpg

Nah. I like him with the growth. And bare chest. Cor frickin' blimey. I like his weirdly-shaped orange eye also. I don't know why, I just do *shrugs*.

But honestly, he's my sorta character. Kinda slow and a it tricky (I must master that damn Earth Divide, it escaped me again!), but a solid attacker with some good combo attacks that don't require you to have hands like ET. Zelphiel
09-13-2005, 06:38 PM
dunno... they probably won't ever make Justice or Kilff balanced... or Robo Ky. Why they let people use Robo Ky in tournaments is beyond me... he's nearly as overpowered as Justice.

anyway... I'm hoping there will be even more secrets/secret characters in this one than what they've told us about.

btw... are Sol and Holy Order Sol going to be two seperate people on the select screen or just costume variations.

Day

I believe Sol and HOS will be seperate characters.

Also, are you thinking of X2 Robo-Ky or XX#R Robo-Ky. Because they are very different, and Robo Ky in X2 was a secret character so he was unbalenced, yes. In #R they made him more balenced, in fact, he's not a thing like Ky or Robo Ky(From X2), cept for the appearence.

Wow... 4? Amazing...

Well, the most ridiculously high priced game is In The Groove 2... a DOLLAR.50! My friend lives by a Chuck E. Cheeses that charges only 25 cents, and you get an extra song...

I mean, damn.

I think Choi from KOF is pretty high up there... He's not insanely fast or anything, but his entire strategy consists of poking at the enemy and then scampering back into the corner... at least the way most people tend to use him.

Kinda slow

you should try to master the poking game with Nightmare. It's one of the only ways you can effectively use him against experienced players.

also... never do the earth divide. it's a slow unblockable that other players can see from a mile away. it's too easy for other players to avoid. all they have to do is step around you and you're totally open.

some good moves to get started on that are (these moves are some of his fastest... and a few of the faster ones in the game. most people think Nightmare is a slow character until they see these moves in action :P)

btw... don't hold the button on any of these. with some of them when you do it puts him into one of the knight stances. it's not a bad thing but it takes speed away from the moves.

> A
sidestep A
A g A (it's a buffer cancel so you have to do it quickly)
v A
df A
db B
df B (hold), B
> K
> > A+K (or < < A+K or sidestep A+K)
db k

that's pretty much all you'll ever need to know with Nightmare. most of his other moves aren't very effective against people that know the game well. just take my word on it. I've been using Nightmare for a really long time. I know him better than nearly everyone I know. My conquest character with him in the arcade has almost 5000 wins. :P

which move in a fighting game is the hardest to perform.

I'll have to think about this one... but I'm sure it'll end up being something from KoF or Garou. lol

William
10-04-2005, 06:57 PM
The hardest move for me to do is that one huge ass combo that King from Tekken does. Yeah, the one that nearly destroys ALL of your life. I just can't do it.

Zelphiel
10-05-2005, 02:16 AM
you've got to be talking about the mexican magma drive.

it isn't a combo though... it's a chain throw. and it's damage varies. if you do the longest version it does 90% dmg.

it's kind of easy to escape... since you have about 4 chances to get out of it. :P

William
10-05-2005, 08:18 AM
I'm not really sure what it is. I know that you do a bunch of regular moves back-to-back, like the powerbomb though.

Zelphiel
10-06-2005, 06:47 PM
which one do you think is the most important to the genre. the one that changed things the most.

I'd say it's Street Fighter 2. It pretty much revolutionized the genre from simple beat-em-ups to what would evolve into some of the most complex gameplay in the world of videogames.

William
10-06-2005, 06:59 PM
I'd say Street Fighter 2 as well. For the same reason you chose it. There's tons of different versions of the game, and nearly EVERYONE young and old (that I know of), knows what the game is. Not many fighting games can claim something like that.

10-06-2005, 07:00 PM

I guess you could seperate it between 2 and 3D fighters.

in the 3D world it's really hard to say which one was more influential between Virtua Fighter and Tekken. They both greatly influenced the genre and were both done very well. It wasn't a copy paste type thing like it was in the early days of the 2D fighter. (no offense to SNK. it's the barrage of other companies that copied... although Fatal Fury didn't get really good until Garou. :P)

Street Fighter 2 and Virtua Fighter. Both games pretty much defined the 2D and 3D fighting game genre, were the first "good" games of their type, and opened the doors to the mass of fighting game franchises we now have

Zelphiel
10-09-2005, 11:28 AM
so... who has it?

it's a playable demo that comes in the newest official playstation magazine. in story mode Kilik is playable and in vs mode Mitsurugi and Tira are playable. You can also make a custom character and choose between male/female and dancer/ninja for the gender and style. so far it's a lot of fun making characters. I can only imagine how much time I'll spend on it when I've got a blank character with all 600+ options to choose from. The gameplay is a little faster than SC2 and the parry system is back to how it was in SC1. It's a little different now that there are 3 different types of parry but they're performed the same as they were in that game.

Which Tekken character is the best of all?

going only on usefulness in matches... not appearance or anything.

I think it's either Steve Fox or Feng Wei.

Steve is top tier in Tekken 4 and 5 for a reason. Feng can parry/counter every non unblockable move in Tekken 5. Nuff said.
