What game did you struggle with the most, and by this I mean the main story not the final optional bosses?
I had a really hard time getting through Final Fantasy I, because there were so damn many random battles and figuring out where to go next is a bit challenging.

yeah, the original FF1 is among the hardest. The real FF4 can be pretty tough too. None of them are on the impossible to beat tier of difficulty though...

I'd say FF4, as there are a lot of bosses I struggled with, and the fact they constantly switch around your party meant that trying to uber-level didn't do much good.

FF4 was a good one but I really really did overtrain my guys so it was too bad
FF1 was hard due to the start if you train you can easily die and you dont have very much cash to start
FF5 was a little tough as well but not really just the 2 optional bosses were tough

Yeah I got stuck on FF1 a little bit back. I'm right after I defeat that vampire or whatever and free the earth crystal so i'm not very far. I am playing FF5 right now even tho i'm coming back to it after quiting it about 4 years ago lol. FF4 for the PS is the hardest tho. Zeromus and a few other battles can be quite challenging.

As I said before, I never considered FFIV very difficult because I had nothing to compare it to. It was my first console game, and my first true RPG. I figured all video games were that hard at the time.
FFV was a bitch for me. Ifrit and Neo X-Death were complete assholes. But I was underlevelled it seems, so maybe it was just me.
FF1 I only played the GBA version, and I heard that was a bit easier than the original. Friggin beat Chaos on my first try with no fatalities...
FFIX was annoying because of the cost of Phoenix Downs and their weak effect.
I think FFs have been progressively getting easier... I wish they would just stop that already.

Yeah they have except for FFX which I hated. I would really love it for them to make an old school FF. Like FFIV style with little people and a battle for the crystals. I like old school. They may not be best looking FFs from a graphics stand point but they are still really kool and fun to play. Also the crystal FF storylines are the best like FFIV.

the only one I had a really hard time with was Bahamut... and that was because Rosa was the only person I had that could cast reflect. I would have beaten him if I still had FuSoYa.

*applauds* I was at the same point, my characters were 32 when I got to the 4th disc, and I couldnt beat that sorceress. I had to restart.

The applaud is wasted
FF VIII had nothing to do with levels, it was all about drawing good magic and being able to junction basically because your enemies level at the same rate as you (except for the monster of heaven and hell) but every other monster does so in other words there are no set levels.
this is a basic chart of how you would compare with monsters
Lvl 100 You - Lvl 100 monster
Lvl 15 You - Lvl 15 monster
Lvl 15 You with flare, ultima and such super magics junction - Lvl 89 monster
when I beat this game my highest level was 27, there was no point in beating the monster when it was more benifical to card them and then refine to gain powerful magic and besides you could avoid monster by the paths and walk ways as well as cars
