Most of you probably haven't heard of this, but its just so damn good that I need to spread the word about it. Here's my rating for the episodes in general first:

1 - 3 *
3 - 6 **
7 - 13 ***
14 - 41 ****
42 - 60 *****
61 + 62 ****************

Yeah I know I shouldnt go overboard like that but seriously its that good...

This anime is made by none other than the guy who did Yu Yu Hakusho. It starts off really slowly with this kid named Gon being rescued by a man who called himself a Hunter. A Hunter is a member of an organization that has pretty much got the whole world at their disposal and is made of only the strongest in the world. Anyone who is a Hunter has access to 95% of all restriced areas in the world, gets a huge friggin credit card limit, etc.

Anyway the man tells Gon that his father, Ging, who Gon had thought was dead, was instead a world renowned Hunter. The man gives Gon a registration card and tells him that he can take the Hunter Exam in a few years and he may be able to find his dad that way.

Gon eventually leaves home and begins the Hunter Exam and meets Leorio, Kurapica, and Killua. The first 25 or so episodes are about the four of them taking the Hunter Exam together. However, the Hunter Exam does not go smoothly and the tests are Herculean, such as running at a ridiculous speed for about 3 hours, going through a tower filled with traps and such, and hunting each other down. The two problems with the test are Hisoka, a psychopathic magician with an intense lust for blood, and another guy that I won't reveal for the sake of spoilers.

From there, Killua leaves, but Gon decides he wants to see him again. The problem is that Killua is being guarded by the most powerful assassins in the world. However, they release him eventually and Gon and Killua begin training so they can beat Hisoka the next time they find him. Their training ground: A tournament tower with 210 floors.

While there, they learn about Nen. That is the "Spirit Energy" or "Ki" or "MP" of HxH. This is where it gets interesting... there are 6 types of Nen Users, each with different areas of specailty:
Reinforcement (Gon),
Transformation (Killua and Hisoka),
Emmision,
Materlialization (Kurapica),
Manipulation,
and Specialization (Kurapica in his powered up state and Kuroro Lucifer).

Then the fun begins... I won't touch on York Shin City much since it is way too complicated to summarize, but basically everyone gathers there because the people who killed Kurapica's family are there. His hatred for them drives him to near insanity, and he goes as far as dressing up as a female hotel attendant to try to get them. Best fight scenes in anime history are in this section.

The main reason you would want to watch this is because of the characters. There are alot of amazing fight scenes as well, but the characters is what stands out the most in my mind. I mean, for the love of god, there is a 13 year old professional assassin, a guy with a dagger hovering over his heart ready to kill him if he makes one wrong move, a cross dressing avenger, a bisexual magician that fishes with his mouth, and THE ANTICHRIST.

If you like the shonen type animes, this is a must-see. There's no absence of a plot either. You'd like this if you liked Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ (pre-Cell), Naruto, or Final Fantasy. It has not been licensed yet so you can still find it on www.animesuki.com. There are currently 3 OVAs and more coming eventually.
