Beware! PC Virus Infects Without E-Mail
A fast-spreading computer worm called "Sasser" that has already hit hundreds of thousands of PCs globally is infecting computers in a brand new way. Unlike other viruses, it is spread automatically via the Internet to computers using Windows 2000 and XP. You don't need to click on an e-mail attachment to get this one, which has virus experts especially nervous. It can even attack your computer when no one is using it as long as it's connected to the Internet.

"We'll be in the dark for quite a while as to how many computers have been affected," Mikko Hypponen, anti-virus research director at the data security company F-Secure, told Reuters. Sasser appears to have originated in Russia, and it resembles last year's Blaster virus, which cost companies millions of dollars in damages. If your computer becomes infected with Sasser, error messages may appear and the computer may reboot repeatedly.
The best protection for corporate networks and individuals is a firewall, which is an Internet road block that separates internal networks and computers from public networks. Also, home users should download a corrective-code software patch to fix the breach. Important note if your PC is already infected with Sasser: The patch must first be downloaded before the virus is removed or else the PC could catch the worm again.
